If Williams leaves in FA after the 2020 season, we COULD net a 3rd round comp pick in the 2022 draft, NOT 2021 like most on here are implying. The 3rd round comp pick, is also basically a early 4th round pick, since comp picks come after the initial round ends, but before the 4th round begins.
I like the move, and I personally hope Williams signs an extension with us right now for something like 5 years and 90-100 million with like 60 million guaranteed. This way we lock him up long term, and can get out from his deal in 3 years if he declines too rapidly. Here's to hoping Brunskill takes that RG spot, and dominates.
I agree with you. The 49ers are loaded with talent and nobody knows how long the window is going to be open, so I like that the team is taking a shot to land a proven player. With the talent on the roster the time is now for San Francisco, so drafting an OT is a bit of a risk for the team. I personally would rather have Kinlaw and Williams over Wirfs and some 5th rounder. The one downside is they've lost a 3rd rounder next season and the lack of draft picks will eventually cause them some problems. For now, I'm a happy camper.
Going from Staley to Williams amounts to a wash in salary cap terms so that's good, and going from Buckner to Kinlaw helps on the salary cap front. I could add that Aiyuk is going to replace Goodwin so there's further cap savings. It is clear now that the 49ers don't value a CB as much with all the rule changes and instead believe the only way to succeed in the new NFL is to get after the QB. Another place they could look at the back end of this draft is another RB in the hopes of going cheaper there as well. I would say C/G, TE, and RB will be the remaining picks. And I guess Goodwin and Breida are worthless on the trade market.
