If both Trent & BA are not playing we're in big trouble.

IMO, pay Trent and ignore BA.

Depends what $$ and guarantees he wants. Also, hard to trust someone who doesn't honor his previous commitments.

Right, it seems like Trent is probably asking for something 49ers can't provide. I hope 49ers aren't forcing him into early retirement.
Trent wants to re-set the market again and once again be the highest paid player in the league at his position. But here is the issue, He is 36 years old. Has there ever been a player in the history of this league who signed a contract to be the highest paid player at their position in their mid 30's? Maybe the QB position but I don't even think that's ever happened at the QB position. This usually happens to players either entering their prime or in the middle of their prime and usually players who are still in their 20's. I don't even think this happens to players in their early 30's.

No idea. How much are we talking here anyways? I mean what is his current number ba what he wants and do they even have the space?
I feel like there's more to it than simply resetting the market unless he's asking for something insanely high. Highest paid LT is 26mil AVG per year. Trent's cap hit is a touch under 11mil this year, but 34 next year and almost 38 the following. Wouldn't it benefit us to do a deal that brings the next 2 years down?

I have a feeling we're quite reluctant on the guaranteed money because of his age rather than the overall number because if Trent gets a large guarantee and then up and retires at the end of this season then our cap gets seriously screwed.

Unless I'm missing something salary cap wise (very likely) it feels like signing Trent would help our cap provided he sees the deal out (which is the scary part)
If I was forced to make a decision I'd tell BA to get f**ked and give Trent whatever he wants for this year and this year alone.

edit: and I may not extend that offer until mid season… for two reasons: a) we may be half decent without him and b) more importantly, he's more likely to have his health towards the post season

Not sure but just due to age I think Trent's future deal is alot harder for the front office than BA and people thought Trent would be easier. BA is 26 with his best years ahead of him. Trent currently is the best LT in the league but he could fall off a cliff at any given moment due to his age and then your stuck paying him all this guaranteed money. He could get injured and then be done and your stuck holding the bag. There is so much risk involved with Trent and the fans and content creators are not taking any of that into consideration. Content creators are like "John is an idiot, just give Trent whatever he wants, You are trying to win a SB" It's not that simple. You can't just think of 2024.

We didn't win the SB win them last year, and aside from Purdy being a better quarterback, we haven't done much this offseason to make it seem we'll get over that hump.

We have some legit players that need to be signed in the next few years. I'd rather we keep guys like Ward, Lennoire, Greenlaw and draft lineman or use FA next year than give in to an aging lineman who has probably 2 max years left in him and a 2nd tier WR that thinks he is Randy Moss reborn.

f**k em both. I think the team does on with out either.

And I am the opposite. I am sick of our front office screwing around and not going all in for a Superbowl this year. There is zero reason why BA and Trent shouldn't have been locked up at this point.

To say you don't care even if it hurts our team is insane to me.

Do the terms "integrity" and "principles" mean anything to you?
Or is it more about winning no matter the cost?
Of course we "care". But really whose being insane here?

PS: The sad reality is that the NIners will probably capitulate. I'd be so much prouder of the organization if they didn't. It's not a forgone conclusion that they cannot win without those Cretans.

When you say "no matter the cost" what you are really saying is "regardless of the future."

So yes, I ama saying its more about winning now than thinking about the future. The future isnt guaranteed. We have a team that is in the SB conversation now. Why mess that up worrying about 2026 and beyond? Makes no sense. There are a large percentage of posters on this site that have never seen a Superbowl win. The QB from our last SB win is in his early 60s now, for gods sake.

Blows my mind that people are concerned with the future over now. We arent going to have this team forever.

Huh??!! That's so far off the mark and understanding it's mind boggling!
No . . . that's not what I'm saying.
I'm talking about absolutes: character and standards of behavior. Now and forever. Not some abstract notion having to do with time.
I'm alluding to something beyond just winning games.
You know . . . hedonism while eschewing all codes of conduct?
Good grief!!

I'm good with that!
Let's be positive. There are no guarantees, but I believe that the Niners still have the pieces to be just as successful.
As you say: Aiyuk is not the second coming of Randy Moss. Purdy made him look good. He'll make someone else look good this season. The team has more speed on offense and another season of experience under its belt. Each member of the OL has to pick up their game a little bit; collectively that can make a big difference. I believe that they will, and it will make a difference!!
I just feel that they'll still be in the mix. Nothing to worry about!
Certainly not now. Before the season has even started!

I'm going with a). By mid-season this team will be rolling and they won't be needing the two miscreants!
Also, imagine how the rest of the team is feeling right now? It's like they're chopped liver; they almost don't count. Obviously, the team cannot function without those other two!
The team has pride and swag. The rest of the players are going to be extra motivated to show that the "experts" are just so much hot air.

Completely agreed. The way it's going maybe they need to sell out for this season lol
The fact thet they haven't signed him for what he wants despite knowing that without him we can't win s**t makes me think that the team knows that Trent's body is falling apart fast.
