next yr it will be him and Brock will be the priorities.

I agree - he should be a priority. I wish they could sign him rn cause I think he is going to just get more expensive. He's going to have a big year imo

This is exactly what I'm concerned about. NFL players are copycats. They see one guy hold out for more money and they decide they want more too. It's become so common now that the games take a back seat to the contracts.

It goes hand and hand…you gotta prove you're a good reliable NFL player in order to get paid

Lenior is a FA this off season, so no holding out for him. they can tag him if need be and work on an extension. Regardless there's a hard date already there for him.

if Brock does what he did last yr, he's gonna be one of the highest paid players in the NFL. That's just how it goes there.

Agreed.
I haven't vetted the info yet, but there's also a PFT article on the front page that suggests Trent incurred $5M in fines, and the net difference wasn't that big of a deal. CBA doesn't allow teams to waive the fines anymore, so it would seem that this helps combat lengthy holdouts.

I think that there's only a handful of players in the league that can effectively hold out. For players outside the top 3 of their position, I don't think most players have the leverage that people think they do in these contract negotiations.
If he's serious about playing until 40, that would be massive for us. Basically means we have five good seasons at LT that we don't have to worry about. That changes the medium-term and even long-term plans to an extent.

5 years of stability at Left Tackle would be a massive boon for us.
I thiiiiiiink tackles can age pretty gracefully into their late 30s? But even if he isn't a Top 3 Left Tackle in those later years, I'll still take a starting-caliber tackle to protect Purdy's blind side.

That will give even more incentive for the team not to pick Tackle. Which they always ignore. He's getting older. Probably 1 - 2 good years left. We need a young star Tackle soon. Glad to have him this year and next year. But he can't be relied on forever.

We definitely need to find his replacement. Draft a tackle as soon as we can, and put him at RT until Trent retires / abilities fall off.

Definitely a long-term need. But curious how we go about this. We figure to be drafting in the bottom half of the first round the next couple years, and quality tackles usually go early. I wonder if we will need to trade up, or just hope we can find something in the bottom half of round 1, or hope we get lucky in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

Why not grab the best T in free agency similar to how we got Trent?

We haven't done a good job at drafting certain positions.

He hasn't played a full season since when? That's my concern. You are healthy until you're not and that doesn't get better with age etc. much harder to recover from stuff.

that being said he's amazing and he's in the class of bosa.

You are more lenient to them financially because they are the two anchors of the franchise.

I don't think the FO has any issue telling Aiyuk and others that since everyone knows it's the truth.

We didn't get Trent in free agency. All-Pro tackles are almost like franchise QB's—once in a blue moon a Kirk Cousins or Terron Armstead will hit free agency but it is very, very rare.

We got Trent via a trade with Washington. And for pennies on the dollar (a 5th + a future 3rd) because he sat out a year after their doctors misdiagnosed a tumor. We got insanely lucky. Normally a really good tackle gets traded for a 1st and change or even multiple 1sts (like Laremy Tunsil). That's what we will have to do if we don't want to draft one. Another HOF tackle magically being available for a sandwich and a bag of peanuts isn't happening again.

Agreed. We were very fortunate to go from Joe Staley to Trent Williams.
We're really going to need to be very good about trying to find a quality tackle in the draft, and keeping an eye out for a free agent/trade acquisition. That's definitely going to be a challenge.

My bad, I mis spoke.

I meant via trade, I forgot it was a trade with Washington.

If you give up 3 first's and a third for Trey Lance, we could certainly survive giving up a few firsts for a proven tackle.
It's a huge relief knowing he's gonna be out there come week 1. Now we can all rest easy
