That will give even more incentive for the team not to pick Tackle. Which they always ignore. He's getting older. Probably 1 - 2 good years left. We need a young star Tackle soon. Glad to have him this year and next year. But he can't be relied on forever.

We definitely need to find his replacement. Draft a tackle as soon as we can, and put him at RT until Trent retires / abilities fall off.

Definitely a long-term need. But curious how we go about this. We figure to be drafting in the bottom half of the first round the next couple years, and quality tackles usually go early. I wonder if we will need to trade up, or just hope we can find something in the bottom half of round 1, or hope we get lucky in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

Why not grab the best T in free agency similar to how we got Trent?

We haven't done a good job at drafting certain positions.

We didn't get Trent in free agency. All-Pro tackles are almost like franchise QB's—once in a blue moon a Kirk Cousins or Terron Armstead will hit free agency but it is very, very rare.

We got Trent via a trade with Washington. And for pennies on the dollar (a 5th + a future 3rd) because he sat out a year after their doctors misdiagnosed a tumor. We got insanely lucky. Normally a really good tackle gets traded for a 1st and change or even multiple 1sts (like Laremy Tunsil). That's what we will have to do if we don't want to draft one. Another HOF tackle magically being available for a sandwich and a bag of peanuts isn't happening again.

Since he loves KC so much we could have signed Jawaan Taylor to $80M in FA. 3rd highest paid RT in football and he blows lol.

but you know it's KC and according to him they do everything right lol.

If you give up 3 first's and a third for Trey Lance, we could certainly survive giving up a few firsts for a proven tackle.

At this point, with how well we've drafted in the 1st… I wouldn't blame Lynch for just going full Rams and just trading them for now on. Normally when a tackle is proven to be good enough to be worth the trade they need a big fat contract too, though. If we could just draft one it would make the late 2020's a lot easier.

Heck, we let Mike McGlinchey go and look at how much Denver paid him. He may not be that good but he's pretty close to the highest caliber of a tackle that hits the open market.

The bottom line is, we need to find our next tackle in the draft, or fork over multiple 1sts for a disgruntled proven one. Trent Williams fell into our lap, doesn't mean the next one will.

There was no salary cap when we were winning Super Bowls, so no. Nobody cared how much we were paying bad players lol

Hard to compare such different eras for sure.

I saw Belicheck on mcafee show say the biggest challenge was keeping a great roster because of the cap and that's what caught up to them in the end but believes he was able to sustain it very long because of having Brady and being fortunate with very good drafts through most of his tenure.

the funny thing is being punished for drafting so well. Our fo finds gems and they develop wonderfully but now we can't afford to keep them etc.

No one cares about decades ago, when there wasn't even FA. Get over it "glorydayz"

No doubt, they need to start invest at OT.

A couple fans in here are getting all butthurt that we're paying really good players and they even say dumb things like we should just sign the "best" OT in FA which are dudes like McG and Taylor.

Well the draft is where ShanaLynch found Purdy, so I'm confident they will find a left tackle in the draft. It's much harder to find a franchise QB like Brock than an elite left tackle.

But I don't think they need a Trent Williams (first round, first pick level athlete) to make this offense a playoff caliber offense. A Joe Staley/Harris Barton level athlete at the left tackle positon will still make this offense lethal.

I think one - worst case option - next year is to move Puni to Left Tackle and draft/acquire another interior lineman, if Trent suddenly retires unexpectedly.

The way you beat cap hell is to draft well. It's that simple. Case in point, Brock Purdy and his rookie salary. It's when you don't draft well (Rams example) is where you get into cap hell. The Rams had to acquire very expensive free agents that blew up their cap after the Superbowl (just like the '94 Niners).

Agree 💯 %, and one of the reasons ShanaLynch has a top flight rushing attack is because ShanaLynch is constantly investing in the positon. Multiple 3rd round pick, day three picks, and undrafteds. I didn't see that occurring much in the past until recently (Puni ~ Kingston◇Burford ~Zakelj).

I hope to be surprised next year if/when ShanaLynch drafts a left tackle in the 3rd round and another left tackle in the seventh round. Hope hope!

The 49ers are a disaster at drafting early generally. Specifically they struggle at offensive line among some others. Banks and Puni are good and exceptions. But lots of misses there too. Including McGlinchey.

Thankfully they are very good in mid to late rounds. Where they really do well is free agency. Chavarious Ward comes to mind. They rob people blind in trades. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey are two of those. They fill in a lot of their misses in FA and trades. I just wish they would draft better early.

Mid to late rounds they do well. Warner (3rd), Puni (3rd), Hufanga (5th), Greenlaw (5th) come to mind.

If this team could draft great early and hit on some offensive linemen especially they would rule the world. It's the only thing they can't seem to do. They do all the rest really well.

I actually really like the NFL's salary cap and how everything works out competition wise, for roster construction.
Teams, for one, have to draft well. And then from there, they have to make choices on who they'll re-sign and keep around for the long term as pillars for their franchise.

I think for the 49ers, drafting and re-signing guys like George Kittle and Fred Warner, who I think embody the culture and play style for our team, are great examples of how you go about it. Should be interesting how things shake out in the long-run. Arik Armstead feels like the first long-term contract that we allowed to let go, and unfortunately, we'll probably see more.

Hmmm... I'm kinda curious how other teams are in the first two rounds:

MAJOR HITS: Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk
HIT: Aaron Banks
WASH: Mike McGlinchey (was a starter)
MISSES: Reuben Foster, Dante Pettis, Javon Kinlaw, Drake Jackson (?)
MAJOR MISS: Trey Lance, Solomon Thomas

TBD: Ricky Pearsall, Renardo Green (early returns for Green seem favorable from TC reports though?)

McG who got paid $85M was a miss lol? That's not how it works….you just have unrealistic expectations on OL, which overall is piss poor across the league. Hence why he got paid what he did. There simply aren't enough good lineman in the league. That's a college football problem.

Also who are all their OL misses? You talking about late rd players who overall have a small chance to be good regardless of what position they play? If anything they simply haven't drafted many lineman more than they missed on the picks.
