We got Trent via a trade with Washington. And for pennies on the dollar (a 5th + a future 3rd) because he sat out a year after their doctors misdiagnosed a tumor. We got insanely lucky. Normally a really good tackle gets traded for a 1st and change or even multiple 1sts (like Laremy Tunsil). That's what we will have to do if we don't want to draft one. Another HOF tackle magically being available for a sandwich and a bag of peanuts isn't happening again.
The 49ers are a disaster at drafting early generally. Specifically they struggle at offensive line among some others. Banks and Puni are good and exceptions. But lots of misses there too. Including McGlinchey.
Thankfully they are very good in mid to late rounds. Where they really do well is free agency. Chavarious Ward comes to mind. They rob people blind in trades. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey are two of those. They fill in a lot of their misses in FA and trades. I just wish they would draft better early.
Mid to late rounds they do well. Warner (3rd), Puni (3rd), Hufanga (5th), Greenlaw (5th) come to mind.
If this team could draft great early and hit on some offensive linemen especially they would rule the world. It's the only thing they can't seem to do. They do all the rest really well.
Hmmm... I'm kinda curious how other teams are in the first two rounds:
MAJOR HITS: Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk
HIT: Aaron Banks
WASH: Mike McGlinchey (was a starter)
MISSES: Reuben Foster, Dante Pettis, Javon Kinlaw, Drake Jackson (?)
MAJOR MISS: Trey Lance, Solomon Thomas
TBD: Ricky Pearsall, Renardo Green (early returns for Green seem favorable from TC reports though?)
Foster, Pettis, Kinlaw, Jackson, Lance and Thomas are a disaster.....
Bosa, Samuel, and Aiyuk are big hits and Banks is a hit.....
