We got Trent via a trade with Washington. And for pennies on the dollar (a 5th + a future 3rd) because he sat out a year after their doctors misdiagnosed a tumor. We got insanely lucky. Normally a really good tackle gets traded for a 1st and change or even multiple 1sts (like Laremy Tunsil). That's what we will have to do if we don't want to draft one. Another HOF tackle magically being available for a sandwich and a bag of peanuts isn't happening again.

The 49ers are a disaster at drafting early generally. Specifically they struggle at offensive line among some others. Banks and Puni are good and exceptions. But lots of misses there too. Including McGlinchey.

Thankfully they are very good in mid to late rounds. Where they really do well is free agency. Chavarious Ward comes to mind. They rob people blind in trades. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey are two of those. They fill in a lot of their misses in FA and trades. I just wish they would draft better early.

Mid to late rounds they do well. Warner (3rd), Puni (3rd), Hufanga (5th), Greenlaw (5th) come to mind.

If this team could draft great early and hit on some offensive linemen especially they would rule the world. It's the only thing they can't seem to do. They do all the rest really well.

Hmmm... I'm kinda curious how other teams are in the first two rounds:

MAJOR HITS: Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk
HIT: Aaron Banks
WASH: Mike McGlinchey (was a starter)
MISSES: Reuben Foster, Dante Pettis, Javon Kinlaw, Drake Jackson (?)
MAJOR MISS: Trey Lance, Solomon Thomas

TBD: Ricky Pearsall, Renardo Green (early returns for Green seem favorable from TC reports though?)

Foster, Pettis, Kinlaw, Jackson, Lance and Thomas are a disaster.....

Bosa, Samuel, and Aiyuk are big hits and Banks is a hit.....

McG who got paid $85M was a miss lol? That's not how it works….you just have unrealistic expectations on OL, which overall is piss poor across the league. Hence why he got paid what he did. There simply aren't enough good lineman in the league. That's a college football problem.

Also who are all their OL misses? You talking about late rd players who overall have a small chance to be good regardless of what position they play? If anything they simply haven't drafted many lineman more than they missed on the picks.

Sure the expectations are unrealistic. McGlinchey was not terrible. A big guy who was a 1st round pick will get paid. Because not many people come on to market. Offensive line gets over paid. In the NFL with elite pass rushers and speed it's tough to hold up all game long. I agree with that. Unless you can hold every play like the Chiefs and not get called for it most lines will struggle sometimes.

Not just line though. They miss a lot of early picks. Other than Deebo, Aiyuk, Banks there are a lot of misses out there for years and years. We bust on a lot of 1st and 2nd rounders.

We can look at KC who folks in here consider the gold standard at everything…

major hits: mahomes/creed/McDuffie
Hit-bolton (debatable if hit or wash)/Rice
wash-Thornhill (not there anymore)/Gay/Nnadi/Karlaftis
misses-Kpassagnon/Speaks/Hardman/CEH
Major misses-moore/cook/Anudike-Uzomah (?)

TBD-this yrs draft.

guess they're not batting 100 either

I haven't kept up on McGlinchey since he left, but I always felt like he never got his off-season program right. It felt like one year, he'd drop muscle/weight to better handle speed-rushers, but then struggle with bull-rushes. And then the next year, he'd overcorrect and try to put on weight. He was ok as a Right Tackle, and clearly there was a market for him when he left... but given his first round grade, I hoped he'd be further along. McKivitz replaced him as a fifth rounder, and it felt like they had similar ability.

NGL, Mahomes being their major hit is what puts them over the top.
Frustrates me that he's been the one that's thwarted us in two Super Bowls, but that's definitely a special QB right there. We have special players at certain positions, but they have it at QB. (I'm hopeful Brock Purdy takes another step this year, because Year 2 was extremely good!)

We've busted on 2 2nd rd picks since they got here Jackson and Pettis. They have a 50% hit rate there which imo is pretty damn good in the 2nd rd.

Now tell me about the 1st round. Minus Aiyuk who is excellent.

No one cares about decades ago, when there wasn't even FA. Get over it "glorydayz"

Without that period in time, we are just a below average organization with no rings, trophy's, or glory days.

Yeah the Yorks haven't done anything. Just talk so far. Jed talks big too. He did when he first came in at least. He has toned that down lately. He talks more about winning NFC Championship trophies and "making" the Super Bowl. Not winning it. Mostly because that's what he has done.

I agree. I don't know how people on here don't see it? Mostly because they don't want to.

You have to figure that the folks from the 80's & 90's don't dominate these message boards. Most of these guys probably never went to see a game at Candlestick Park. So it makes sense to me. We are probably communicating with recent high school graduates for the most part.

Nothing wrong with it, they just don't know the history. I though what I was seeing in the 80's and 90's was the norm. LOL

Yeah that makes sense. They probably think making the NFC Championship Game or making the Super Bowl is really great. Most teams don't do that.
