Something tells me that Trent Williams isn't the guy you want to franchise tag

No, he was a LT his whole career. Not sure how I feel about this trade.

However, Williams failed to pass a physical exam, as he experienced discomfort with his helmet due to his scalp having postsurgical soreness, which resulted in the Redskins placing him on the non-football injury list."
Yes. Did you think I asked whether he was still good by ignoring the fact that he sat all of last year out at age 30?
Why wouldn't he still be good? Hes still 31 and didn't have a any kind of physically debilitating injury. As long as hes been staying in football shape he'll pick it up where he left off. Hes been an elite player for a long time.

I think Williams would be a better fit there

It's that the 49ers have an ELITE GM. WOW LOL. Only John Lynch could smooth things over between Snyder and Shanahan.
This is key. This is a great move for a great player and unlike Sanders, this time they will work on an extension immediately. He's a core player for three next 4-5 years at a crucial T spot and ALREADY knows the system.
Yes, I think he's got another 4-5 years. Although he's an athletic beast, he isn't all about athleticism and strength. Like Staley, his game will age well.
Technician. No question.

I am stunned that Staley is retiring. It's an assumption that he waited to inform the organization, but it certainly seems like the most likely scenario right now. Wow.
You won't get a Trent Williams Type in the 5th or 3rd rounds.
I actually think we would have been stupid not to take Williams after watching our o-line in the super bowl.
we can get those picks back by trading back next year, may get the 5th back this year depending on the Goodwin trade options.
All of these are good points. But tackle was never the issue last year. Joe played well when healthy, as did Skule and Brunskill. The issue is guard.

Doesn't Staley HAVE to retire in order for the 49ers to afford to keep Williams on the roster? Or does cutting/trading Goodwin get us the space we need?

I love the trade and am praying it is in no way an indication of Joe Show retiring. He was still our best lineman last year. If anything kick Glinchy inside and Williams at RT.

For a 3rd and a 5th, that's a fantastic deal for a Pro Bowl OT who should have another 4 years left.

This gets me hype, I'd kick Staley to the right side and bring big mike inside, he's better at run blocking anyway

Uh no. We are happy... We literally upgraded at left tackle for a 3rd and 5th rounder.
If Staley makes it official and retires, then this is an amazing move as it instantly plugs a huge hole. It's like getting a 31 year old Staley.

lol Trent isn't playing anything but LT. Believe that. Joe Staley has already said he will never play anywhere but LT, and he would retire before he'd play RT or be a backup. So this kind of signals his retirement.
