I honestly didn't think it was happening, cause everything Lynch threw out there that Staley hadn't told them he was retiring, but he was masterful with the talk, we got Trent for peanuts, Washington, and the NFL didn't know Staley was retiring. I wanted Williams only if Staley was retiring. I loved Staley, but glad we have Trent, he's younger, and yes better than Staley, but will miss Joe big time.

Nice post AB. Thanks, and i couldn't have said it better.

STALEY should have retired 3 years ago.. I've always felt that way.. and it would be a DUMB REASON if Lynch says that the only reason why they traded for Trent was because Staley decided to retire...

there is no way Lynch can stand and man up and say that he would have NEVER traded for Trent if Staley decided to play for another year..

BUT not liking the trade was actually different than the ones who were spittin at the idea BEFORE the trade happened..

I honestly wanted Trent because Staley has been done for the last 3 years and I kept repeating that.. I also hope that we resign Trent for another 3 years.

I think Washington could have figured out that Staley was retiring just from the fact that we were trying to trade for Williams in the first place. What tanked Williams trade value was that everyone knew that they had no choice but to trade him since he refused to play there and also that he hadn't played in a season.

Williams is definitely an upgrade over Staley.

No doubt. And that's saying something.
The Niners lucked into the perfect storm for Washington. Basically got him for peanuts.
Now just hang on to him for the longer term.

Exactly. No question TW not only forced a trade but forced a trade to us, specifically, hence why we got him so cheap.

Mad balls by Lynch for not taking a T with the first pick knowing the TW trade wasn't fully consummated yet. Crazy risky IMHO.

I thought about that too, that was so risky because Minnesota possibly had him before us, it seemed like the deal fell through and he went to us. That was balls to the wall but I'm so glad we got him
Williams is a better talent than Joe, but joe was so important to the locker room and culture - I hope Williams can help replace some of that as well

IIRC didn't Lynch publicly say he attempted to trade for Trent mid season due to both tackles going down. Was going to slide him to guard once Staley and McG were healthy or something like that.

I think when both were 100% healthy Joe was just a hair worse. Staley's run blocking was elite when he was healthy. One of the big differences IMO is that Joe was more inclined to play through injuries so there's more 'bad tape' of Joe if that makes sense. Not a knock on Trent since he was playing for a toxic organization.

I honestly believe that Lynch knew Trent will be 49er for at least a year and that's why he let Bucko walk and drafted Kinlaw...

Shanny repeatedly said that they were going to take Ayuk with the 13th pick.. that tells me Trent was already a 49er... Kinlaw is the choice if available and Ayuk would have been their first pick if Kinlaw was no longer there..
I see Williams being a little rusty for the first 2 games then come back to dominance. I can't wait

Yeah I don't think Williams is significantly better Staley, in my eyes Staley is a first ballot HOF. He had a great career and was at the top of position for pretty much every season he played.

It doesn't matter what you or any other fans wants/thinks, Staley played and played damn well. If Staley hadn't retired, we probably don't trade for Trent, cause no way is Staley sitting, or McGlinchey. And Trent wasn't gonna play Guard.

Yeah saying Joe should have retired 3 yrs ago really makes zero sense...he played at a top-end level and finically was a steal for SF.

Moon's comment makes absolutely no sense.
