One thing that was really cool was if the Washington deal didn't go through, one of our Plan Bs was to try to draft [OL] Colton [McKivitz] there in the fourth round and then we made that risk to move that to go up and get the receiver we wanted. Then we did end up getting Trent and to still be able to get him (McKivitz) in the fifth round was a hell of a deal. We felt really excited about how today went." -KS
They had McKivitz as a plan B potentially replacing Staley
Lynch and KS ice water in the veins gamblers ...Jimmy could've had a rookie 4th/5th rounder on his blindside

They most likely meant move Mike to LT and keep Colton at RT

A deep dive into the #49ers' draft class, explained by top scout Adam Peters https://t.co/pyEVUkJUxV

Peters described McKivitz as "an acquired taste."
"He grows on you," he said, "because when you look at him at first, he's not the greatest athlete. But he's extremely consistent, he's extremely tough and he's extremely smart as a football player."
Peters noted that West Virginia wasn't very good in 2019. The Mountaineers finished 5-7 and tied for seventh place in the Big 12. Still, he was named first-team All-Big 12 and was a second-team All-American.
"When you're not on a good team you don't usually win awards like that," Peters said. "So that says something about the respect people around that league and around the country have for him."
Peters said McKivitz earned what the team calls a "gold helmet," something that only 15 to 20 players in an entire draft class get each year. To get that designation, Peters said, a player has to hit a number of what he called "exemplary" criteria, including his character off the field and his football intelligence. Peters noted that McKivitz played right tackle, left tackle and some guard at West Virginia and that he knew all five positions on the offensive line.
"So if you had to throw them in somewhere he was ready to go," Peters said. "He's a really, really bright kid. Despite not being a great athlete, he was very consistent, and he was very productive. And those are things you can win with."
"There's not a lot who earn that," he said of gold-helmet status. "It's something that you have to really earn, and it's not something we just hand out."

I have been re-watching a lot of the games from this past season and inspite of what the collective memory may be in regard to Skule's stint at left tackle he was mostly getting his ass kicked in pass protection. Jimmy's quick release saved him on several occasions. Skule was better in the running game.

For the fact he was 1. a rookie, and 2. in place of Joe Staley, I'd say he did a good job from what I can remember. The 9th OL spot is likely between him and Compton, who has versatility on his side, but costs $2.7M where Skule costs less than $700K against the cap.
