as JL pointed out with KS this guy was a gold helmet

For fair and balanced reporting (haha), he was also cut b/c after 3 years, he wasn't cutting it like Skule. Maybe the cut raised his work ethic, studying, etc.

Sometimes that's what it takes.

My 'guess' was since he was a gold helmet, character, work ethic, film study, attitude, etc. wasn't the issue...talent was.

they did mention he was a lil shy at first and it took him a bit;

re: this years draft, they said they weren't gonna draft a tackle just to draft one, the draft didn't fall the way they had their board aligned I suppose, there was the early run and teams with need start overdrafting the position

Yet they picked up 3 as UDFA that were on their same board.

It's all good. Let's see how it pans out now. In Foerster, I'm starting to trust. If he can get to the level Kocurek, it's on!

"Going back to my time in New England, they have a really small draft board," said Nagy. "I mean, it looks like a two-day old turkey. It's picked over. They don't have a lot of names up there. They draft for roles. There are specific roles on that board and once those are gone, what's the point of drafting a player if you don't think he's going to help you that year?"

He added: "A couple of other teams I was with -- much bigger boards. We're talking 75 players maybe in New England in a typical year when other teams have over 300. It varies by team, but when you're working with that small of a draft board you know who you want. You're really focused on those player and once they're gone, that's when you start making those moves."

That's interesting. 75 players huh. That means like 50-60% of the prospects aren't even in their mind while some of the fans are clamoring for people. Hahaha

Imagine this FO using that big board approach... this place would melt down.

Pats are hyper focused on Pats type players, they know what they want. Doesn't always mean they were right but it's managed to work for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if we did something similar, but maybe not as extreme as 75.

my guess would be that the team has made improvements and adjustments to the way they scout players over the years as they've learned from their mistakes.

Early on we took a lot more really talented guys but with questionable character concerns or health concerns - it wasn't also a failure like Foster was, but seems like we learned from it. The last handful of years we've focused on more high character guys.

less guys like foster, Joe Williams, Dante Pettis, Hurd, Street etc.

He will be key to a 2023 deep playoff run. If he can be a good right tackle this year, he just might be the possible replacement for Trent down the road. That saves the 49ers a 1st round pick for another OT or DLine in next years draft.

I think it will be alright. Foerster is the OLine coach and coached up Brendel, Burford and Banks last year to a high level. He made McGlinchy a ton of money from the Broncos. I think - unlike - coach zigonina and Cassius Marsh, we actually have a good OLIne coach and a talented player. McKivitz handled Aaron Donald pretty well in the past.
I would rather our pass protection be better than our run blocking. Some running backs can create on their own especially McCaffrey however with bad pass protection it's done. Especially playing great teams late in the playoffs with great quarterbacks you need to pass to catch up or when they stack vs the run like teams always do vs the niners.

Also, Aaron Banks is excellent! I think he will be a top 10-15 guard next year if he isn't already.

They did sign Matt Pryor. I think the last OL spot will be between him and Jaylon Moore.

Plays high, misteps, unbalanced base, erratic punch, timing inconsistent, etc. The post-whistle stuff is just going to get him a penalty eventually.

TBF, he was playing LT and against Donald, who the Rams identified as the weak link (appropriately). We'll see much more of that this year.

Fortunately we had quick passes and he had plenty of help.

Yeah. As for Colton, he'll make the team but I don't think he's a lock as a starter.

All three have a golden (pun intended) opportunity here.

Moore I think drives the coaches freaking nuts. He'll look amazing one play and then terrible the next. The guy can do it, he's just been so insanely inconsistent. They haven't been able to rely on him.

Moore and McKivitz are both still young (25 & 26 respectively) though, so maybe they can break through this year.
