I'm going to overreact based on 2 games, the game McKivitz played yesterday and the game Dallas played last night. Dallas is the only team in the league with a defense as good as the Niners, and there is no way in hell McKivitz could stop anything from their rush. I do NOT want to lose tho the Cowboys, and Colton McKivitz could be the reason they do.

I think it is up to Kyle to help McKivitz (have a back chip the rusher) on those deeper drop backs against a top tier pass rusher. Brock needs to help him as well by getting rid of the ball quickly or step up in the pocket.

That's what Kyle had to do with Glinch. Which is one reason why Glinch signed a FA deal with the Broncos and is no longer on the 49ers. At some point, the 49ers have to develop a tackle that doesn't need that kind of help. A tackle that can hold his own, no matter what the competition is.

I hate to keep harkening back to the 80's decade, but the 49ers had a line coach who could develop talent. It really didn't matter what round that talent was selected in, the 49ers developed that talent. Both Joe Montana, and later Steve Young, benefitted from very good line play. They were not perfect. No line is. But they were good enough.

A lot of this comes down to coaching and the ability of a coach to spot talent and advocate for drafting that talent. QB coach Brian Griese struck gold with Purdy. John Lynch mentions Griese's role all the time with the Purdy selection. Griese not only spotted Purdy, he helped to develop him into what he's become.

At some point, that has to happen with the offensive line. Not just tackles, but the entire line. You cannot sign a bunch of players like Trent Williams. You only get one. Teams need to develop the rest of the lineup.

That said? It's only been one game. I'm sure McKivitz knows he needs to step it up. I hope he can.

Personally, I'm pretty confident in Foerster's ability to develop Offensive Linemen - almost to the point where McKittrick was. One reason was last year the interior line was unknown and had a lot of young raw talent out in the interior, Trent was the only known factor. McGlinchy was coming off a severe leg injury, and Banks, Burford, and Brendel were brand new starters. They did OK, and even McGlinchy did well recovering from the injury and moving on to his 2nd contract. I have confidence in Foerster's opinion and ability to develop McKivitz. Now, having said that, I still want a high round pick going to the Offensive Line next year. I also am still ticked off that the Latu pick wasn't an offensive tackle instead.

Foerster last season developed Banks, Burford, and Brendel. All 3 were first year starter. Burford had a rough game, but I would expect the interior line to get better from last season.

Agree, those are all things that Kyle can do to help McKivitz. Additionally, they can run right at McKivitz DE, and line up a TE on McKivitz side in a double tight end formation to help McKivitz block, instead of a HB chip block. Lots of tricks for Kyle to use. Personally, I just got the feeling that Kyle was testing McKivitz to see if he can handle a TJ Watt type level pass rusher by himself in the 2nd half. That's the time TJ Watt started doing damage to the 49er pass offense. Heyward was injured in the 2nd half, and so I think Brendel was schemed to handle the backup DT by himself with the Burford and Banks dealing with TJ Watt. Just hope that McKivitz learned a lot when he went one on one with with TJ Watt so giving up 3 sacks shouldn't happen again, hope hope!

Good point! Burford is a 2nd year starter and did have a rough Steeler game, and I think one reason was that he was playing next to a new guy in McKivitz, vs a long time starter in McGlinchy. I'm confident that it was just first game issues, and that they both should be able to get better with more Reps, and with Bosa acting as TJ Watt 2.0 in practice. We'll see if my confidence is warranted in the next Rams game coming up.

If that's the case, with Purdy just returning from a serious injury from a play in which Kyle had a TE blocking one of the opposing teams best rushers, someone needs to have a serious talk with him. I can't imagine Kyle would intentionally put Purdy in a spot like that.
Brocks biggest weakness is he doesn't sense pressure well from the right side. It was a common theme last year too and unfortunately saw it in yesterday's game. This is a pretty big concern with McKivitz there. Looks very slow and terrible in the above video. At least just try to get in the guys way more even if he does run you over....

I am not sure it is necessarily the right side. I would say it is more like the blind side. If he is scanning the field on the right side, maybe he won't sense the rush from the left. I don't know if other top tier QB can always sense their blind side either. It is more a question of how often a QB can sense the pressure. I don't have an answer to how good or bad Brock is on this. We have definitely seen him sense the free rusher and spin out of trouble a number times.
I vaguely remember McGlinchey's first couple of outing, he went against a quick top pass rusher and didn't fare well. Did ok after that. I can't remember who that was...been awhile. McKivitz will be ok.

I know he just got a huge contract, but it doesn't seem like McG turned out to be that great at pass blocking.

His awareness could have been better yes, but I give Brock a pass on that since his awareness is still better than any QB the team has seen since Garcia.

Kyle is an aggressive head coach. Sometimes too aggressive. If you look at his offense, it's as Air Coryell as a West Coast offense can get. That fourth down call was not a safe call, it was a very aggressive, all or nothing kind of play. He's kind of like that in the playoffs too - I think just too aggressive - when he needs to dial it back against some of these playoff defenses.

He seems to have a sixth sense for pressure coming from the left and doesn't see it nearly as well when it's coming from the right.

Brock gonna have to have pocket awareness on his right side. He's has to know Colton ain't gonna hold that s**t down, especially vs a guy like Watt.

if he doesn't he's not gonna make it through the yr

We HOPE.

IMO the quality of o-line play has dropped big time and most people tell me its the CBA. The reduced offseason stuff has hurt o-line development compared to before.

I find it ironic the league has purposely pushed to be a passing league, but pass protection has really gone down overall.

I wonder if coaches will migrate to more elaborate running schemes to help develop lineman (and qb's now that I think about it) along more reasonably. I am surprised more teams don't try to run like we do.
