Blows my mind that he's even being considered. Kaden Smith is good enough reason for Kyle and Lynch to admit the screwed that one up big time
I don't think they screwed it up it was more by necessity Garoppolo was only 9 months removed in July from his acl. There was no way they were going into the season with only two qbs. Now I agree that this year there should only be two on the 53.

Yep Taylor and Blair will probably start the season on pup or ir players like Willie Henry and Kongbo which I think has a legitimate shot at making the team will get a lot of play time if there's a preseason.

We also didn't really have a QB on the PS who showed much. Maybe we can get a taker for CJ somehow...if not just call it a day and move on.

He's up for a new contract after this year anyways so no point holding onto him. I'm thinking Kyle understands with a roster capable of making a run you better have as much depth at other positions as possible.

God forbid if we had our top 2 QBs get hurt it's a put a fork in that season anyways. 3rd string QB isn't coming in and leading you to the SB.

Like it AB. The only difference I think we might see is one of Hasty or Ahmed don't make the practice squad. Instead I would plug in Kongbo and roll with that. Good work

Forgot Kongbo I think he;s destined for the PSquad to start out as a developmental guy, so over Jonas Griffith or Al-Shaair, or like you said if one of the backs doesn't make it to the PSquad. Of course we have the ability to add 2 a week to the 53 to make a 55 man roster, not sure if they sign full contracts or if they go back to the PSquad.

Something to note that I do know, PSquad salaries are set/capped, no more paying more like we did with Elijah Lee, paying him the minimum for his tenure to be on the PS.

Maybe they trade Mullens to the Pat's and roll with Beatherd as the b/u?

I'll take a quick stab at the logic behind the change...

A big motivation it seems is the ability to bring a guy up from the practice squad on a temporary basis, but not have to release him and send him through waivers and hope you can resign him to your practice squad.

As an example of the implications and strategy: When Juice went down last year, we could have made Daniel Helm active, but still a practice squad member, so as to have a proper fullback. Even if he played and did an alright job, the chance of him being picked up by another team would have still been small as that team would have to have needed a fullback (not many do) and would have to have signed him to their 53 to get Helm off the practice squad.

Another example that has been touched on: Beathard last year was basically the emergency option at QB. We kept him just in case the starter (Jimmy) got hurt so we would have a backup the next week who can at least run the offense a little. If Rutter looks alright this year, you can keep him around and make him the emergency QB if needed on game day so his usage in that way wouldn't be any different than the way we used Beathard last year. He probably won't play because he will be the backup, and even if he plays a little it is unlikely that another team would pick him up. Again, the other team would have to sign him to their 53.

If any P.S. player looks good in a game, it works out well for them because now they have teams competing to sign them off the practice squad.

Interestingly, it looks like backup QBs could be the most impacted group here. If teams are less likely to keep 3 QBs on their 53 because they can elevate a P.S. guy as an emergency option, it doesn't leave a lot of demand for players like Beathard on the 53 man rosters. It really creates a problem for those "veteran" backup QBs who aren't eligible for the practice squad (3rd string QBs have different P.S. eligibility rules as I just learned). I think Beathard is eligible for the P.S. and if that is true, we might actually see him there due to decreased demand for 3rd string QBs on the 53!

I probably missed something important here, but the strategic implications are certainly going to be interesting!

Beathard should be out instead of Givens in this scenario. But we know that won't happen.

I dont see Jullian Taylor on the opening day 53, he tore his ACL late 2019, so he may end up on PUP to begin. I still think Tom Compton makes it, he can play T and G.

Good point on Taylor. You may be right. Compton may stick with minimal time for McKivitz to get up to speed. I think S. Coleman sticks though. He's been under the radar.

It's just a risk Kyle is going to have to take. Seeing Kaden Smith have some success towards the end of last year in NY should be reason enough for the team not to carry 3 QBs. Broc Rutter will be fine on the PS. Smith very well could have made the team this year and perhaps Lynch could have used one of those later round picks to add help at CB or DE.

It doesn't make sense to me that many are ready for the 49ers cut ties with Thomas and Pettis after they didn't live up to expectations but seem ok with keeping Beathard for another season.
I can't wait to see the battle we'll have at WR. Should be the most competitive group on the team if everyone is healthy.

Saw this on Reddit and it gave me a laugh

Deebo
Bourne
Aiyuk
Hurd
Pettis

How I see it at the moment. The top 3 are locks obviously, I think Hurd has a lot of talent and was primed to contribute last year had he not been injured. Pettis was garbage, but he was a high pick and I would like to think he comes back motivated and maybe he found his nuts.

I know we want Taylor to be the next Cole Beasley or something but the dude is just too injury prone and I don't believe he's THAT talented.

Jennings might be a wildcard, but as of now he's a slow 7th round pick. Looking forward to him being baby T.O. if he can put it together.

Taylor may be on the way out they signed his replacement in undrafted free agent Chris Finke. Finke is a little bigger, A little faster and has excellent punt return skills. He will be a fun guy to watch battle for the slot.
