This is a really tough time since this virus is new and we don't know if it will die down in the summer or not. Here in Eugene they started reopening last Friday and I saw a lot of cars in the restaurant parking lots. I also saw a fair number of people not wearing masks in the supermarket. It seems like some people have just decided on their own that they've been cautious long enough and it's time to get back to normal. Problem is the virus isn't gone and infections will rise if people don't take precautions.
There are a lot of underlying conditions and they aren't limited to older people. Asthma and type 2 diabetes both are common in younger people and can cause complications if you get COVID-19. Hopefully we will get a vaccine sometime next year but I won't be surprised if we have to get a shot every year to protect against whatever strain is circulating. They already have found 30 different variations of this thing so like the flu there may need to be a different vaccine every year for it to be effective.
I agree that we can't stay quarantined forever but I'm also skeptical of the general public using any kind of common sense. Based on what I saw last Friday with people acting like everything was fine I'll be surprised if we don't see new cases in the next 2 or 3 weeks after going 2 weeks without any new cases. If that happens the stay home orders are probably going to go back in effect. The number of cases in the U.S. are continuing to go up. Texas is starting to see a big spike over the last week. You can't just look at what' going on in your town and make your judgement based on that. If people would use common sense when out then I would feel more confident about reopening but common sense and humans don't seem to mix.
Agreed.
