He has a terrible catch% and I kind of looked into it. He's never had a catch% over 50% in a any meaningful season - meaning when QBs target him, less than half the time he's catching it. Catch% does not take into account bad throws, it just counts how often he's targeted and how often he catches it. So if the QB throws it at Nelson's feet (or severely overthrows him), it still hurts his catch%.

I did a search on all of Nelson's career targets and there were 277 plays (NFL Gamepass). I then did a search for the word 'deep' since the play description will describe where the pass was thrown. I got back 102 instances of the word 'deep'. This includes preseason so it's not super accurate, but the point is, playing in Bruce Arians 'no risk it, no biscuit' offense that liked to throw deep, Nelson was often the deep threat target and those throws are low percentage.

Super helpful man. Thanks for this. If his game is skewed towards the long ball, why has bounced around so much? Just curious as to what you've seen/heard.

I would think Arizona's coaching changes and the offensive system may be hiding some hidden talent there. At least I hope so. Where he can help is on the play action passes. With a #2 ranked run offense, those play action passes (called at the right time) should have him wide open. A good catchable throw from Jimmy should allow more catching success for Nelson.

Nelson got a mention from a beat writer who I won't name. Got run with the 1s and made a few catches (8/25 practice). Still my candidate for the 'scrub signing that will contribute' award.

If true, and usually you aren't far off, this again proves we have one of the best coaching/scouting staffs in the NFL.

Kyle knows how to use speed better than just about anyone so I guess that means this guy has a chance

He should, his whole offense is based on speed. Everybody in this offense has speed. His offenses remind me of the Old Raider offenses (except Kyle's offense is much more horizontal than vertical). Al Davis would run right at you and play action over you, Kyle will run left or right, and playpass to the other side - but speed was essential in both systems.

ok, nevermind

"J.J. Nelson has come in and done a real good job," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show while discussing the receivers. "He's been banged up the last two days. We just got some injury stuff on him yesterday, so he's probably going to be out here for the next month, so you lose another (receiver)."
Unbelievable . Remember when we were having discussions about how much better our WR room was

Tavon Austin (mostly ST) is still alive and kicking for me for the same award.
