1. The blocked punt
2. The Niners failure to score from the 1 yard line
3. The defensive holding call when the Niners had the Cards stopped. They would have punted from the end zone and the Niners would have had it around mid field.
4. Later in that drive, the Niners get called for a late hit on Murray which was highly questionable. They were able to continue the drive and score the TD.
5. Murray's runs. It kills a defense when you have the play covered and guys like him keep making big plays. Jimmy is a better QB but he can't make those kind of plays.

Those late hits on a QB that runs so much need to be looked at by the league. He didn't slide feet first and the defender tried to miss him and really went over the top. It's really asking a lot from a defender who is bearing down on a runner to be able to avoid even touching him.

Agree with all, #1 just changed everything. Have them confidence.
What happened to our epic pass rush and run game? + Murray ran for a 100. Our passing game was abysmal I don't expect Debo Samuel to get our offensive engine running single handily and Aiyuk is a ? unless we are able to shake some rust off I don't see us as legitimate Super Bowl contenders like last year

Nice rundown. I'd just add one more that Jimmy was very indecisive when his first read wasn't there. Can't tell if he didn't see open WRs or there aren't any open WRs. The film will tell us this.

THIS! I was saying this all game! Jimmy was not going through his progressions at all! Just staring down one receiver and if he wasn't there he would either force it or take the sack. One that stuck out to me early was after the big play to Mostert we ran the same option route but this time Mostert cut outside toward the flats and when they read it perfectly he looked like he had no idea where the 2nd read in his progression was!! So frustrating to watch. It reminded me of Kaep in Chip Kelly's offense when asked to drop back but at least if Kaep's first read wasn't there he had the ability to run.

And that "late hit" on Greenlaw was total horses s**t

Also Brunskill gets shoulder checked by TW as he's pulling. Just enough to throw the timing of the play off and may have been enough to get the TD had this error been corrected. These are timing and cohesion issues that do get fixed with familiarity and continuity within the offensive line. At least that's what I'm telling myself to cope with the loss.

To be honest, this reminded me of a preseason game...really the only reason they won was because of Murray scrambling around (which you don't need preseason practices snaps for). A lot of one read and go stuff. Nothing special on their offense at all. Great for not having much of a off season, it will limit them though.

Jimmy played bad, I do expect him to get at least to the point he was playing last yr...it was nice to see him moving around inside/outside the pocket more than last yr.

We're gonna be fine, people (including myself) gotta stop with the instant reactionary stuff. Only gonna make you angry and look silly later.

Regarding the pass rush, I think there's more to the story than we know. My guess is that the gameplan was to try and contain Murray instead of blowing up the rush lanes and potentially giving him an avenue to scramble. Of course, he scrambled anyway...

if jd doesn't get to making a video will you still be opening up a film thread? would love some cut ups or summarizing thoughts after you've had a chance to see the tape

He has certainly come accustomed to relying on Kyle to scheme that first read open. When it's not there or his eyes drop, bad things happen. I wonder if the Cards got a beat on blanket coverage the 1st 3 seconds to "take that read away" and then make JG beat you with #2 (i.e. play more tight man off the LOS. Challenge more at the LOS).

Most likely. I'm really curious on the plays where I thought Jimmy had time but didn't know what to do with the ball.

From what i remember our defense was roughed up twice by Murray last year. It was our offense that bailed us out..so yeah what happened..s**tty QB play and s**tty refs

This. I'm all for player protection but I just don't know what a player is supposed to do when their coming full speed and a guy last second drops and doesn't even slide. If the defender slows down and haults his momentum the qb will not drop. He can just shift and run another 5-10 yards.

The league cannot render the defense completely helpless like that.

Agreed, I've been reading a lot hot takes and "its the end of the world" type of talk on here today. I think It's mostly because people we're expecting us to start off clicking on all cylinders and look like we did towards the end of the year last year. Not going to happen, not with the offseason and weird TC we had. I'm confident that we will turn this around sooner than later and the same people acting like the sky is falling will be back to normal again lol

The only time I saw any real movement was on that scramble up the middle where the Cards left the entire field open. Murray probably would have taken that to the house. Jimmy got about 8-10 yards. He rolled out a couple of times but he still isn't good at avoiding a rush. He doesn't throw really well on the move when he has to roll out and often doesn't get his feet set. Instead of turning his back and running away he stumbles around and often turns into the rush. I know he doesn't have the speed of some guys to run away but he needs to have some idea of which way to turn. Kaep was the same way except he had the speed if he got outside to turn it into a big play. Jimmy doesn't have that. We can blame the O line but the fact is the other team makes plays too

that's literally all I'm interested in as well haha
The worst thing about that loss is all the other teams in the division won.

Good point. I have to think on some downs the pass rush was instructed to stay in their lanes - 'rush to contain' rather than 'get to the the QB at all costs'. The QB being the quickest guy on the field is a problem.
