Great job Jonny, can't wait for the Warner film. Fred has been playing like a top 3 LB so far this year.

Alexander on the other hand has looked god awful every game this year. If he keeps it up and Greenlaw is healthy, by mid season we should see a change.

I thought Alexander played a very, very good game vs the Jets. He looked like week 1 2019 Kwon to me

I stand corrected god awful was a bit much but he did not look good by any means. All of their biggest plays were a direct result of him misreading/being out of position. All of the designed QB runs he looked silly. Especially the read option around the 9 min mark in the 3rd quarter, he tries to set the edge but ends up doing this weird unathletic looking block shed slip/fall down move that you cant tell if it was a mistake or on purpose. He is very much a liability in the run game.

What I will give him credit on is his ability to go man up on the RB in the passing game. He completely shutdown Lewis.

It might be confirmation bias on my part, but too often, big runs start with Kwon not playing his assignment with discipline. The NYG and NYJ offenses are pathetic so lots of 49er defenders are going to look fine. Kwon is in his element covering on pass plays. Run defense is not his strong suit.

I agree 100%. Judging by the way he looked lost on those QB designed runs, a little more Dre and a little less Kwon when playing the Seahawks, Cardinals, Pats, Bills could go a long way.

This is the JWilson catch on a 4Q 3rd & 8. The 49ers finished this drive with a Wilson TD run.
NYG trying to play defense on 'expert' difficulty.

This is related to the play jd cut up at 6:15 of his video (completion to Dwelley). That Dwelley play happened at 2Q 3:30 left in the half.

This play here happened at 2Q 5:20 left in the half, so this is before the Dwelley catch. Same idea as the play in jd's video, vs Tampa2 where a vertical route (TTaylor) is used to occupy the orange 'pipe' defender - pipe defender covers the area between the two safeties - for another route to attack the vacated area (Aiyuk).

Tomlinson got beat, sack before Mullens could pull the trigger to an open Aiyuk.

-------------------------------
This is Aiyuk's 20 yard catch, longest career catch in his young career (mid 4th quarter). This is versus Tampa2 and the 49ers will use the same idea to attack the area that the pipe defender vacates. I think there's a bit of an adjustment here because of what the orange pipe defender does that isn't typical.
NYG shows single high safety but will rotate to Tampa2.

As the orange pipe defender gains depth, he should face the strongside of the passing formation. In most cases it's the three WR side. He's not doing that here and is cheating over to Dwelley (weakside), perhaps because of Dwelley's catch earlier in the game vs this same coverage (jd's video).

The pipe defender fully commits to covering Dwelley on the weakside, this is not expected. Mullens sees it and targets Aiyuk who does a good job finding a passing lane between the two underneath Hook defenders.

This was a key 3rd down that led to the final nail in the coffin for NYG.
3Q 3rd & 10
49ers have been willing to blitz and man up all game long and here in the late 3Q, show blitz with man coverage. KWilliams is looking as if he's going to blitz off the slot.

49ers back off into a Cover3 but man up on the weakside (DJohnson, Kwon). Tartt is playing middle deep safety, he's just cheating over to the strongside.

Jones mid windup and Verrett sees it and looks to jump the route.

It's actually a very good pass by Jones, but with the WR forced to toe tap, he ends up one yard shy of the first down. Check out this thread on Verrett's play, it's good.

--------------------------
Down 23-9, NYG goes for it on 4th & 1 from their own 30 yard line.

Turnover on downs. On the ensuing drive, Wilson scores on a screen pass. gg

Check out D.J. Jones blowing up the center
Saleh has definitely stepped up his blitz packages. And he dials them up more frequently.

These are the differences from 2017/18 to 2019, in my observation:
- 2017/18 had 5 man fronts in base (4-3 Under), in 2019 that was gone as they went to wide9 which is a four man front with all three LBs off the ball.
- Like jd said, 2017/18 was all about single high safety coverages (Cover1, Cover3). 2019 had much more split safety coverages in comparison (Quarters, Cover6, Cover2)
- These are all changes that deviate away from the "Seattle Cover3" that we saw with the Legion of Boom. I don't know what SEA does nowadays.

Through three games in 2020, these are the differences I have noticed from 2019 to 2020:
- More blitzing of DBs (Ward, KWilliams)
- more man coverage on 3rd downs
- playing the two outside CBs as field and boundary. In this game, Verrett was the field CB.

All these changes over the past two seasons move the scheme away from being the "Seattle Cover3" and gives the 49er defense its own identity. I think it's a good thing because I like being able to throw variety at opposing QBs and giving them more to think about during the week of preparation.

Suck ass on defense
