Just because a player was great on the field doesn't mean he would be a good coach. In fact, most great players don't become great coaches. For one thing, they may already have enough money and don't need the headaches that go with coaching. For another, they are often such perfectionists that they have a hard time coaching guys that don't measure up to their standards. Look around the league. Nearly all of the great coaches have never played in the NFL or if they did they had modest careers. Very few HOF players even want to coach. We used to hear that Ronnie Lott or Jerry Rice should be coaches. Why would they want to? They're both financially well off and don't need to go thru the rigors of that life anymore.

Solid post man!
I'm for Demarco - keep the D as close to the Saleh D as much as possible.

Agreed. I could see Rice doing little things here and there with a player, but not being an actual employed/full time position coach. Hopefully we have a defensive assistant on staff ready for the promotion.

Johnny Holland was our LB coach until Ryans was hired. Holland's role changed to OLB / Run Game Specialist. So he could revert back to his LB coach role.

Otherwise, Frank Bush (interim DC Jets, DC for Texans when Ryans played) is another candidate. Ties to Ryans and Shanahan. Richard Smith (LB coach for the Chargers, former DC for Texans during Ryans playing days) is another potential candidate.

Yeah I think Frank Bush too. You are forgetting he and Korurek and Oden were together in Miami a few years ago.
I just want to keep our current scheme as much as possible.

The "greats" are usually driven to succeed and unlike average humans.

Jerry Rice is the unquestionable greatest player ever and he always played with fear/doubt. His HOF speech was about never stopping and always fearing to fail.

He literally said this "I'm here to tell you that the fear of failure is the engine that has driven me throughout my entire life."

You can't teach those types of intangibles as a coach.

Usually it is the average career long backups who make the best coaches because they had to learn the tricks and techniques that let them compete with people who were athletically superior to them

Good. Not that I think Kyle would consider him, but we fans can stop talking about him as being a possibility.

Who are the candidates?

IMO, if that qualified someone is already here then go with him.
How soon can the decision be made?
Quinn hired by the Cowboys, so for the folks advocating for him, he gone.

Bullet dodged.
