Not too difficult,we are 4 days in.
A good QB can make throws and execute an offense.

A great QB can lead his team and score points when you're down 20-0 and carry the team on your back.

I dunno. Seems pretty simple to me. And frankly, I don't even think Jimmy even qualified as good this year. Same with the other QBs in our QB room. They can not even make basic throws that an average QB can make. Now whether or not that is really due to his ankle, or whatever, IDK man. Jimmy seemed GOOD enough last year to execute the offense and take us to the playoffs. And he showed flashes of greatness in 2017 during meaningless games when we were out of the playoffs. So they gave him that contract because the coaches also saw those flashes. It's not rocket science.

The question for me is really....even assuming Jimmy's ankle heals up and he stops making excuses about it, do we need to be paying Jimmy at that salary just for someone who at best, is just a good QB? When I feel like we can get a good QB like a Ryan Fitzpatrick for cheaper to execute Kyle's offense? Or just draft some early round rookie to do it instead of some late round reach like CJ Beathard? That's the million dollar question.

So far, the only defense I hear from Jimmy fans is that we should keep him because hes 24-9 as a starter. And that moving on from Jimmy presents a big risk for the Niners because Kyle has shown that he cannot win with any other QB on the 49ers without him starter. To me, this is just loser talk. Even if it does present some risk, Jed already gave Kyle that extension for a reason. The ownership still has confidence in him.

I really hope Kyle has a lot more confidence in himself than the fans do, and really goes out and tries to upgrade if he can. If he really cannot find anyone better or if the draft doesn't fall the way he expects it to at the #12 pick, then I guess keep Jimmy. But there needs to be some visible improvement, IMO.

We aim to please. Makes sense too when you factor in Jimmy and one of his dates.......butt if i go any further you know I will get kicked to the parking lot thread.
I also respect the OP and his way with words.
Darn, I was looking forward to the angst on her breast

Colin Kaepernick - 48.28%
Alex Smith - 51.35%

JGs games played is too small to consider vs Joe/Steve - yet I get your point. Valid.

Yes, a better number is to include the games he should have played in but was injured. Compare that with the great modern QBs. Durability is a big part of winning.

Yeah, if you're going to scramble, scramble and get out of there, don't stay in a 3 foot circle. 1 out of 2 of the steps doesn't quite cut it.

I think Kyle has done a great job in getting the QB he wants and developing them. Reason being, he wanted Jimmy and whalla, got Jimmy. Remember that prior to Jimmy coming here, *nobody* knew what he could do, but Kyle and possibly J.Lynch/Bill Bellicheat. I used to think that Jim Harbaugh was the QB whisperer with his reputation bolstered by working with a guy named Luck and enabling a guy named Colin to take his team to the super bowl, but he was unable to develop Colin further and he hasn't done much (on the QB side) in developing another Luck/Kaepernick in U of M.

I think that Kyle (given he's only Head Coached about 4 years) has developed Mullens (UDFA) into a QB that can *win* games at the NFL level, and also even CJ BeatHard has looked decent in his two games in 2020. The point I'm making is that Kyle seems to know QB's and/or knows the QB's that will work well in his system. Kyle seems to like Jimmy and I don' think he's wrong, and Kyle's also been working with more mobile QB's like Broc Rutter in training camp - in other words, I think he's continuing to grow on the QB coaching and development side, whereas a coach like Jim Harbaugh hasn't. As a fan, given what Kyle's done in only 4 years on the QB side, I think I'm pretty confident Kyle not only has the QB he wants, but he'll get more from him, and if the QB he has doesn't elevate his game, Kyle has the talent and the vision to get another QB possibly even more talented than the one he has right now. Best way to elevate a current QB's game is to get another talented QB to compete with the current QB. Neither BeatHard nor Mullen's gives Jimmy that kind of competition though.
I always felt that the things you can't measure were what separated good from great. Among those, pocket awareness and field vision rank high on my list. You can't escape the rush if you don't see it or aren't aware of when it's coming. That sounds obvious but so many QBs are so focused on a receiver that they never see the pass rush, even when it's in their face and the defender can reach up and tip the pass.

Field vision is probably my number one thing. The greats have it and there's no real test that reveals it. Aside from having strong arms, it's what makes Mahomes and Wilson as good as they are. They always seem to be able to spot the open guy even when they're forced out of the pocket. Montana never had a great arm but he always saw the open guy. We used to marvel out how he would find a wide open receiver even when he was under pressure. I remember reading an article in SI about him after they won the SB against the Dolphins. They said that with his vision and ability to stay calm he would have made a great fighter pilot. Maybe we need to recruit our QBs form the Air Force or Navy.

That Navy QB is currently on the Dolphins roster.
