2021 Team Needs/Top Targets: (Draft & Free Agency)
Team Needs: QB, IOL (C & RG), CB, ER (Speed), XWR (Speed), T (Future), SS, TE2, SWR, ST (Returner)
QB - QB might be the first pick if their guy is available. There's nothing more important!
IOL - Once again, Weston Richburg's future hangs in the balance. Ben Garland, Daniel Brunskill and Colton McKivitz do not appear to be the answer and RT Mike McGlinchey fell off a cliff as a pass protector. 2 different QB's were placed on I.R. 3 times and gave this unit gave up 124 QB hits (2nd most). Unit pass protection remains the teams #1 need/issue.
CB - Will Jason Verrett, Ahkello Witherspoon, K'Wuan Williams, Richard Sherman, and/or Emmanuel Moseley be back?
ER- Once again, Dee Ford's future hangs in the balance. Kerry Hyder is an UFA as is Ronald Blair who missed all of 2020. Nick Bosa is returning from an ACL.
XWR - Kyle badly needed a speed guy after Marquise Goodwin left. He was unsuccessful in finding this player last year. This can be a ST player (returner) but a threat of that outside speed, even in part time duty, really helps open up Kyle's offense.
T - If the FO loses UFA Trent Williams, this will jump up to a high priority. Either way, a real talent needs to challenge Mike McGlinchey as he's way too comfortable and he had PRP injections last summer and lost a ton of weight to help minimize the strain on the knees but it cost him dearly in pass protection.
SS - Jimmie Ward (SS) and Tarvarius Moore (FS) are most likely your starters with quality depth in Marcell Harris who can also play SAM. Jaquaski Tartt is most likely gone.
TE2 - Imagine what Kyle could do for Jimmy with a TE2 like the Patriots had with Gronk/Hernandez. I believe Jalen Hurd was going to be our Hernandez but with a busted back, ACL and chronic injury concerns, ShanaLynch might need to go another direction here. Jordan Reed is a question-mark.
SWR - This position fell off a cliff and badly needs big play from both a big and small slot.

NFL Draft:
Team Needs: QB, IOL (C & RG), CB, ER (Speed), XWR (Speed), T (Future), SS, TE2, SWR, ST (Returner)
How a scout ranked the relative strength of each position group in the 2020 draft class: WR, OT, CB, DT, QB, RB, IOL, LB, ER, S, TE.
Draft Position Rankings: QB, OL, WR, Off-Ball LB, DL, CB, RB, TE & S (per Richard Shiro A/P)

High Value = Top 2-5 player at that position because of where your pick is at and when that position group starts to run traditionally
High Value+ = Top 10 player in a deeply talented position group

Pre/Post-June 1st Information:
June 1st Designations - For the two (2) June 1dt cut designations, they become free to sign anywhere when they're designated June 1 cuts, but the team won't get the money until June 2nd. Every team needs to be under the cap by 4PM EST on March 17th when the new league year begins.

Pre-June 1 Cut - Basically means the team takes on the remainder of any prorated money (signing bonus, option bonus, base salary), and is counted as dead money in 1 year. Player becomes a Free Agent right away; example being Richard Sherman last offseason.

Post-June 1 Cut - Basically means you spread the dead money over 2 seasons, so say the player has $6M in bonus prorations left, and has 3 years left, the dead money wouldn't be even, it would be $2M year 1, and $4M year 2, player also becomes a free agent right away.

Options - Like with Pierre Garcon, and Earl Mitchell have to be picked up or declined before the beginning of the new league year. If declined, it's treated as a Pre-June 1 cut for dead money, hence the $7.2M dead money for Garcon, the player becomes a free agent right away after the option is officially declined.

Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag - The team that uses this has the right of first refusal, and, if they choose not to match the offer sheet, they receive two first-round draft picks.

53 Man Roster Projection Rules: --- Courtesy of AB81Rules
--- Injured reserve players must first make the initial 53 to be placed on I.R. to be eligible to return after week 8
--- Only 2 players can be placed with the "designated to return" label per year
--- Players who never came off the PUP list through TC (W.Richburg, G.Celek) will not count against your 53
--- Vested veterans (S.Coleman, J.McKinnon, T.Taylor) must be cut at the 53, clear waivers, and then they can be resigned the next day

Practice Squad Eligibility Definition: --- Courtesy of AB81Rules
The standard eligibility for a player to be added to the practice squad is he is a free agent and has not accrued two years of NFL service. A player can only be on a practice squad for three seasons total in his career (six weeks on a practice squad in a season counts as a season for these purposes).

The league does allow for exceptions to the less than two-year rule, which was expanded with the 10-player rule. Teams may keep up to four players on their practice squad who have accrued two seasons of NFL experience, which allows a fringe player the chance to stay with the team, even if he already has been in the league, while also allowing the teams to keep more veteran players.

Accrued seasons are earned by being on the active (53-man) roster for a team for six games in a single regular season.

NFL Salary Cap Increase by Year:
2014: $133M
2015: $143.28M

2019: $188.2M
2020: $198.2M

Rookie Cap Pool (10 Player Draft): $9,104,447

Practice Squad Clarity: --- Per AB
For 2020 you can have a 16 man practice squad, each week by Tuesday 4PM EST you have to designate 4 players as untouchable, when the next Monday comes they become free to sign elsewhere, then the next day you protect whoever 4 players you want too. As for the 2 each week being elevated to the main roster, they go back to the practice squad without going through waivers. For the initial wave of PS players, all players cut must go through waivers to get to the initial PS, except vested veterans like Dontae Johnson, if they choose to sign to the PS. Players with 2 or less accrued years get $142,400 for the season, players with 3 or more accrued years get $204K a year. Players with less than 4yrs accrued have to go through waivers when they get cut at the final cut down which is in 13 days I believe.

2 players elevated each week can't come up more than 2 times in 1 season. If they want them up for a 3rd time, they have to sign a regular contract with the team, like under the previous CBA, kinda sucks, means someone like Tavon likely wouldn't take a PS role.

Haha. I like one-stop shopping. But it's really not as much work to start annually...maintaining it, however, is.

Good work, NC. Will re-visit repeatedly. Scanning the signed players list, it's clear we need answers at CB.

Much appreciated. Yeah, if QB isn't in play, you could argue CB is THE top need at #12. No doubt.

Looking forward to your off season plans with OTC and others!

My pleasure, bud! I couldn't agree more.

For the record, wanted to put AB's thoughts here as well. Thanks AB.

AB81Rules - Hall of Fame

Trent Williams SHOULD be priority #1 this offseason, over extending Warner, why? Cause Warner is signed for 2021, and will get a new deal later in the Summer, like Kittle did, TW needs to be brought back, even I, as a McGlinchey supporter, can see his issues in pass protection, I'd like to see them keep Trent, maybe extend Laken, McGlinchey is the RT in 2021, you save nothing by cutting him, not sure what value he'd have in a trade. As for C and RG, I liked Brunskill at C, but if a better C is there, go for it, if Richburg is willing to take a massive pay cut, like from $7.85M to $1.075M(The minimum), then let Richburg compete. RG wise, idk, McKivitz needs to be developed, Brunskill isn't really bad. I doubt Kyle drafts a IOL high, not his MO, we should be drafting a EDGE, CB, and another WR in the first 3 rounds IMO, if we can trade up into the 3rd, then get a IOL, but I don't see Kyle spending high picks on IOL. I think he can get the most out of late rd picks/UDFAs/cheap vets, like he does with UDFA RBs, and Cheap RBs. Some positions he values differently, and I'm cool with that, had we had a healthy Jimmy, Kittle, and Deebo/Aiyuk all year, I think we're in the playoffs this weekend, but, it didn't happen. Sucks, but honestly 2020 was always gonna have a asterisk next to it due to COVID and all the opt-outs.
Great work NCommand
