Our big issue last season was back up Quarterback play

Maybe our starter needs to be more reliable and less injury prone?

Tampa Bay has Blaine Gabbert. Do you really think they care?

Yes and no. The prior season, NO had Teddy Bridgewater. They had a mobile quarterback backing up a pocket passer Drew Brees. He played within their system. When he went to the Panthers, he rushed for 280 yards last year. I think we need someone like this. Someone more mobile then Mullens and Beathard as a backup. Some one who can at least elude a porous OLine to get the ball out to one of our playmakers. But that's just me.
Mullins proved he is not adequate and so did Beathard previously. Rosen is worth a shot as a backup, and we should get a cheap vet who knows/can learn the system to be able to hold the fort when necessary for a few
games without inevitably turning the ball over twice or more per game and losing. We don't need much--just not a turnover machine.

Reading this thread just reminds me that it takes a lot to learn Kyle's system thus Jimmy G is starting 2021 (unless Aaron Rodgers comes available).
He showed faith in his 2nd string for a fair while giving him a chance to carry out his plays but Mullens failed to execute at some stage during each game ending in interceptions before running with CJ who did get thrown onto the pile to send one down the field a couple of times which is a bit of a big ask for a guy sitting until 1 min left in the 4th Qtr.
However KS does expect these guys to know the playbook and when they executed they could look good.
Obviously Mullens must have looked better at practice to be 2nd string then would fell the pressure and loose his mind during the game.
I thought he should have thrown the ball away more often than he did, he was thinking a would eventually get it off to someone then interception due to pressure, tip or who knows.
It would have been nice if the line stepped up with all the injuries. The QBs on this team need more time mainly because they are slow to process.

But that is the point. KS is the Quarterback Guru, He is known in the league as a developer of good QBs. I can understand if he came from a Defensive background and his specialty was coaching up DBs, or CBs or some other position. But that is not the case. He is the QB whisperer. Why was the backup QB position one of the big weaknesses in the team? It should have been the strongest.
Nope, half the damn team was on IR chief.

I think the difference is what the team could control. If what you say is true then the organization is responsible for the injuries thus being the biggest issue. If not the the biggest issue for the season was not defense, fumbles, pass rush, offensive play calling, refs, etc etc but could be argued was what the team needed most. Solid QB play from the JG replacements..

By saying injuries was the issue it sounds like someone cursed the team and no one is responsible except the boogie man.

However, to be fair I don't know how an organization can plan for every situation when leaks keep popping up everywhere in the dam. They did really well to win some of the games that they did. What I hope is learnt from this is that the importance of who you play 2nd down QB cannot be trivial in todays league. I felt there were times that Beathard should he played in front of Mullens. Also why didn't Johnson get garbage time play to see what we have?

You can have Greg Cook back there as QB, but if you have AJ Jenkins to throw too, your QB isn't going to be good either.

Totally agree. Didn't we get another Josh for the veteran? Josh Johnson?

That's right - we shouldn't be worried about backup QBs.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. Not only Johnson, but Rosen was active for the last 2 games. But I guess the games were too close and KS did not want to take the chance. But Johnson should have been in there at some point. He is more mobile then Mullens and Beathard and with a suspect OLine, he could have made some plays with his feet.
I guess someone else is talking about the backup QB too.

I guess at the time they had an outside chance of getting to the post season. Lynch got the backups for Kyle.

So the question is did KS choke......again?

December. "But look at Jimmy, look what he's done, look at where he's at with us financially and we better have a very good answer if you're going to find something better than that, because Jimmy's shown in one year that he's a guy who can take us to the Super Bowl and I also think Jimmy's going to get a lot better the more he plays."
