If healthy(er), are the 49ers a win now team?

If the answer to that question is yes, then Jimmy G is the QB.

Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Mac Jones, or Josh Rosen are not the answers in 2021 since it's well documented that a QB doesn't fully understand Shanahan's offense until the 2nd year. So with any of them, 2021 would be a wash. MAYBE Watson could overcome with his running and off schedule plays, but a trade is not happening.

is Jimmy perfect? Of course not. He needs to be more consistent and healthy. But who's to say there won't be a jump in 2021, a possible 2nd full season.

Here's the real quandary: if Fields or Lance is there at 12, I'm fine taking them. Or, if they wait, say a Kellen Mond in the 3rd. But, does Rosen and a rookie actually make anyone feel better than Beathard and Mullens? Again, they're new QBs to the system.

So, assuming Jimmy is the starter, what is the best possible QB depth chart to hedge against injury but with an eye on future potential?

Yes, I think we can win now with a healthy team. I'd roll with Jimmy this year - take Lance or Jones at #12, let him learn Shanny's offense, with an eye in starting him in '22.

I think it's valid, people aren't paying attention to the league nor Shanahan QB's if they think a QB will walk straight in and immediately be better than Jimmy.

Deshaun probably could just because he's a stud, but there would still be growth to do.

I agree that Jimmy should be our starter, I'd like a rookie in the building as well though. My dream is Fields or Wilson being in range to trade up without selling the farm, though its more realistic that it's Lance or Mac Jones.

I wouldn't hate this.

I don't believe 2021 is a win now year so having a plan in place for 2022 and beyond as win now years is pretty high on my must do list for our FO.

If we don't believe we can win in 2021, then I think we should go all in on acquiring a new QB.

Either Deshaun Watson (unlikely) or trading up for Zach Wilson or Justin Fields

Wouldn't it actually be the opposite? Sticking with Jimmy for now makes more sense if the FO doesn't believe the roster is good enough to compete right now and wants to retain draft picks in order to fill the holes. If the FO believed we were only a QB away from being contenders, trading for a QB makes more sense, look at the Rams for example. The other option is that they think we're a QB and some other critical pieces (o-line, CB, DE opposite of Bosa) away from competing.

With the amount of free agents we have, it's also impossible to know at this point whether or not this roster is even on paper good enough to compete for a championship. We have basically no DBs under contract right now and no LT and there is no guarantee that we are able to resign any of the FAs we have at those positions.

Just win, baby. This year, next year, every year.
Kind of yes. That's why I've been a little conflicted on drafting a rookie Qb to be THE Qb.
Kind of early to make a prediction, I'd say. Too many Players are FA's, the Draft is still a long ways away as is the FA signing period.

Many pieces are in place but there are so many question marks. Have a better idea when it gets closer to OTA Season (whatever form that will be in). OTOH, I have become somewhat of a Fatalist on the Injury outlook for this Team. Every Team gets injuries, but the 9ers seem to get hit with a bunch of Key injuries almost every year. We did OK the last trip to the SB, until late in the year when there were just enough to thin out the DL when it mattered the most.

The Team needs to figure out where the Injury Curse came from and perform whatever Voodoo ritual they need to in order to make it go away. Something to do with the move to the South IMO.
Yeah the OP and the majority of replies hit the mark.
It's not which QB draft options are the best and brightest, based on 16 or 30 college starts, or who's mobile enough or accurate enough...
Or which FA or trade options are valuable or affordable...
The whole decision of the FO to approach FA and the draft is based solely on whether we are currently built to win now, or are building to win in 2022.
There's an argument for keeping JG and his $25 Million if the team is still built for a run this year. And for that we'd pass on the Shiny New Toy.

Correct. It is win every single year. Not believing in that "Superbowl window" bs. The window has to stay wide open every year.
If you think they are win now, then you probably think highly of Garappolo. But if you are in the camp that says hes maybe #3 or #4 best QB in the division, then I don't see how you can say they are win now. Unless you are saying the defense is going to carry them once again.

To me, it is hard to put that on a rookie DC. I wouldn't be surprised if Niner fans had some growing pains with DeMeco. Remember there were "Fire Saleh" articles on the Webzone in 2017.
