The 49ers haven't used a base big end or 1t in 2 years. The big end is a heads-up alignment from the end that was in the past used to 2-gap. That spot was filled by a traditional 3-4 defensive end(ie the original big end: Red Bryant)--hence the name big end. That's gone. Next, the wide 9 uses a 2i nose tackle instead of a 1t. Technical semantics? Yes. But I hold my fellow fans to a higher standard.

This. I feel like I'm constantly pounding the table for players like Kerr and Jones. No matter the scheme I love having these stout athletic bowling ball DT's that use their hands, re-establish the line of scrimmage, can shoot gaps, and occasionally rush the passer.

Maybe it's because I played DT in HS but I just don't think people realize how important these two players are for our team. Losing Jones would have been a big blow to our defense and not only did we keep him but we added another underrated player just like him.

Hurst might be the bigger name but Jones and Kerr are just as important going forward IMO.

MIND BLOWN DUDE. Whatever they're called Kerr can play them, I just loved the signing, no worries understand on the higher standard thing, lol

I'm with Waterbear, I love having guys like Kerr & Jones on the roster, Kerr is versatile, while Jones is deceptively fast for a guy his size, in 2019 when he ran down and sacked Murray, WOW, I think he may have done it twice.

I just saw the 49ers released Kerr. Dude was terrible.

Pure garbage player. Man how badly the IDL was overrated. Hurst is always hurt. Street Givens and Kerr just aren't very good. Dj is the only IDL playing well. And we wonder why Fred isn't making any plays

Kerr was bad, I wish Hurst could stay healthy, as for Street & Givens, they're good for what they are, Street has been getting good pressure into the backfield, we need to look into drafting some IDL, pray to god DJ re-signs, I want to see Darrion Daniels on the 53 badly, he has potential. I have faith that Kinlaw will come back stronger, and to those who say Armstead is done, he isn't, 1. he's a damn good player, is he $17M a yr good, no, but he's played very well, and 2. the lack of depth on the IDL, same with Ward at FS, he's here for 2022.

The dude struggled mightily to hold up in the scheme. Every time I watched Kerr, he was getting totally washed out.

Because the wide 9 is only a 4-man front and so spaced out, there are some MASSIVE bubbles for the offense to attack. Those 2 interior DL are under constant pressure to defeat double teams vs runs like inside zone, duo, etc. The 49ers may need to blow up and rebuild their entire IDL personnel group outside of DJ Jones and Javon Kinlaw this offseason. I think we need more big, beefy IDL that defeat double teams in multiple ways and less undersized pure penetrators like Street and Givens because those guys rely too much on knifing doubles and struggle to consistently hold up when OL get hands on them.

This is likely why the team loved Javon Kinlaw. He's a rare athlete that has the athleticism to explode and attack while also being big and strong enough to defeat double teams in run defense. Unfortunately, Kinlaw is falling apart.
