First thing I thought about when I heard the news was the Niners have solid intel the Jets aren't taking Wilson at #2. If they were, then the trade is with them, not Miami. Pretty sure Shanahan wants Wilson...he fits Coach's offense very well. Another thought is WRT Lance...he certainly didn't hurt himself at his Pro Day...in fact, he blew it up. His experience level could be a red flag for our braintrust...if so, I get it. I think if the Pats offer a 2nd or even 3rd rd pick for JG, the Niners take it. Their 3rd rd pick is much better than the end-of-the-rounder they gave up to Miami. All of this is pure conjecture, but at a minimum this trade executes what most of us have thought...they're putting their chips into the center of the table for a QB not named Jimmy G.
Word is that Kyle is ok with any of the top 3 QB's. Steve Young made that historic 50+ yard run in '88 to seal a playoff spot and a super bowl championship. The two back to back super bowl years ('88 and '89) Steve Young started 3 games when Montana (I guess) was injured. If a Rookie QB deal is 3 years at bargain prices (defer to AB81 on this), conceivably you can keep a rookie behind Jimmy for three years and trade Jimmy in the 4th - to have that QB depth. Patriots with Tom and Jimmy won two super bowls, and maybe one reason is tremendous QB depth.

Gotta say it: I think a lot of people are completely misreading the Garoppolo situation. The 49ers think they can win the Super Bowl this season. That isn't likely with a rookie QB starting. Unless they get a tremendous offer, why give up the SB shot by moving Garoppolo?

Did you ever think the Jets might not want to go all the way back to 12?
But maybe they're willing to go down to 3.
Exactly

You mean where they traded down a spot, took the guy they were going to take anyways and wound up with two extra 3rds, one of which turned into an All Pro LB? I'd say that trade worked out pretty well for them.

if they can get him at #3.
Just by physical skills, he can do it all. Run threat. Big arm. He can do pocket passer, run pass option like Lamar Jackson, roll outs, throw on the run, playaction.
Probably better to watch complete (abbreviated) games of these guys. I think most of them by now have every throw of almost every game in their college careers.
Yeah, the Lance hype is from his pro day and FO's that rely on pro days are out of jobs quickly. Lance has a great deep ball and athleticism... everything else is a question mark. He ground balls bubble screens, he forces the ball into his WRs with his strength rather than accuracy and more often than not waits for his WR to be fully open to rocket the ball rather than anticipating the opening. Never trust a prospect that skyrockets up boards cause of a pro day. Most impressive pro day so far... but who really gives a sh*t about pro days. It confirms things you see on tape... it shouldnt create value that doesnt show up on film. Lets remember that Jamarcus Russell had the best pro day most scouts have ever seen...

The Texans aren't trading Watson at the moment and nobody is going to touch him until his legal issues are cleared up.
Also, if you're looking to get cheaper at the QB position, which the 49ers are (they need the money for Warner and especially Bosa), then the best way to do that to draft a QB.
The latter I agree with, I wouldnt want to see either Warner or Bosa walk.

But if he was trying to get the #5 overall pick how would he know that Wilson or fields would make it that far? I think it's lance bro.... or Mac.... both will make it to 5

Right. He's probably here until the end of the year. The rookie takes over in 2022, right when the 49ers need his money to starting looking at extending Bosa.

I don't like this trade. Perhaps we should have tried harder to get Stafford. This roster is not meant to spent that much draft capital on a rookie QB. I can understand spending that much draft capital for a star QB like Watson (before the allegations in recent weeks) or Stafford
I disagree. I think you can spend this kind of draft capital on any rookie - QB or otherwise - because of Kyle. He basically saves you a draft pick for a top of the line RB. He gets them UDFA, and he can shift what picks he could have used on a top flight RB to any other position. QB, EDge, Left Tackle etc... The last two drafts have been solid. Other than Hurd not being healthy, I couldn't spot a Joe Wilson, Reuben, Pettis or a Solomon in the last two drafts. I think he can recover some of the draft capital spent (I think two consecutive first round picks in '22 and '23 to trade up to #3???) by drafting well and finding gems in UDFA.

I am not buying all this for Jones...you wait till the draft and see if he is there at like 10...you dont hop up there now to 3.
^ This
He also thought we would sign Hue Jackson as our HC
He's a good writer though, just don't bet on his predictions.

Exactly what I was thinking, except I'm really starting to believe it's Jones.
