They traded back and gained picks. Complete opposite scenario. All though they could move up to 2 and then it would be pretty much like the Solomon Thomas trade except the Niners are the Bears. Make sense? Lol

Yeah, OK, but what if Jimmy G. DOES win the Super Bowl next season? What are you going to do then? DUMP THE GUY?
I really don't want Lance or Jones @3. If we made this trade intending to draft one of those 2 I'm disappointed and think Shanahan has shown yet again an inability to properly grade QB's.

You don't give up three first-rounders to sit a player on the bench an entire season. Yes, You might not want to rush him out in week 1, but there is no way you don't start them at all this season.

He will get multiple 1s. There is NO DOWNSIDE to the Niners keeping Garoppolo for another season.

You mean where they traded down a spot, took the guy they were going to take anyways and wound up with two extra 3rds, one of which turned into an All Pro LB? I'd say that trade worked out pretty well for them.

The later round picks are fine consolations since Thomas is a bust at his draft spot. The hope was for Thomas to be great, hence the reason for moving up to get him.
I'm putting my money where my mouth is.

I think they draft Mac Jones.

But if he was trying to get the #5 overall pick how would he know that Wilson or fields would make it that far? I think it's lance bro.... or Mac.... both will make it to 5

If he didn;t know, then it was a dumb trade but like some other poster said they could trade back down if their guy is taken or try to go to 2.

Yeah you do. You want to win the SB.

No downside to keeping Garoppolo.

Right. He's probably here until the end of the year. The rookie takes over in 2022, right when the 49ers need his money to starting looking at extending Bosa.

Most plausible scenario.

You don't trade to #3 for Mac Jones. The 49ers want an athletic QB.

You trade to whatever spot you can if you don't want to wait for #12. Look at the draft list:

1. Jacksonville Jaguars *
2. New York Jets *
3. Miami Dolphins via Houston Texans
4. Atlanta Falcons *
5. Cincinnati Bengals
6. Philadelphia Eagles *
7. Detroit Lions
8. Carolina Panthers *
9. Denver Broncos *
10. Dallas Cowboys
11. New York Giants

All those 6 * teams will be picking a QB if they think the value is there. Every one of them would jump at the chance to replace their current QB with Mac Jones. With four consensus quality QBs available, you get nothing at #12. So, you look at trading up. Cincy already said "no." Atlanta is going to draft Ryan's replacement. Philly was out of the mix early. Carolina and Denver are going QB if they can. The only option was #3. None of the intermediate choices were available.

Everyone who reads this board knows I'm not a Jimmy fan, but the smart move is to keep him on the team through 2021. We don't need the cap room this year and it would give the rook time to learn the system and build confidence. Who knows, if the kid is good enough make he takes over mid/late season. This is best case scenario.

There's ties to Fields and this coaching staff....the fact that they're not planning to move Jimmy leads me to think it's Lance/fields as well. Jones can play day 1 buy his ceiling is not even remotely close to the other two
