If you want Jones, you don't have to move all the way up to #3 to get him. You could easily trade up to the top ten on draft day if that's who you really want. There's no need to give up 2 firsts to get Jones when there's that much QB talent on the board. For this reason it means that Shanny/Lynch are thinking that whoever their guy is, he will be gone by #4. Show me one single recent mock with Jones going at high as #4.......

The point seems to be, that with the Jags, Eagles, and Broncos, for sure, and the Jets, Falcons, Panthers, and now likely Texans all wanting a QP picking ahead of SF and all wanting a QB, Jones could very well be gone before the 49er's #12 pick.

So, no, there is no certainty at all that Jones would still be on the board at #12. In fact, if he is the #4 rated QB, as many say, he likely would be gone by #12.

For arguments sake, in your scenario, what team gives up 2 firsts for Jones?

Lol, no team is my bet.
Everyone needs to just sit back and enjoy this, SF hasn't been this bold about the QB position in over 20 yrs...it's about damn time
WZ gonna implode when we trade a 3rd for Sam Darnold and draft Penei Sewell.

2 firsts but whose counting?

No. It is 3 first even if you're swapping firsts it still counts as a first

Trading Garoppolo now means no SB this season.

You don't give up three first-rounders to sit a player on the bench an entire season. Yes, You might not want to rush him out in week 1, but there is no way you don't start them at all this season.

LOL. KC, Baltimore, Green Bay x2, 49ers, etc.

It's a luxury but it's the right way to get the best out of your current starter, keep his trade value up and allow your rookie time to acclimate to a very complicated NFL system.

Edit thought Mahomes started year 1 I guess he did start the next year. Lamar was a late 1st round pick, not a team that gave up 3 first-rounders. It has been a long time since Rodgers and again he was a late-round pick. It is a different time now. It is better to just give the rookie the NFL experience. We could start Jimmy but no way he finishes the season as the starter.

trading for Darnold to be a bridge starter for the rookie is smart. and lets stop with this drafting OL lol

Still have all their picks this yr and the 3rd they have multiple 3rds next yr.

this is pocket change compared to past trades imo. Back to back late 1sts meh whatever. they will recoup some of that with Jimmy getting moved as well.

Yeah I'm juiced! Two late 1sts and a late 3rd for a franchise QB. All damn day!
Interesting aspect to this monster decision made by SF to move up for a QB, is that it was done before the final top end QB, Justin Fields, has had his pro day. No matter what, Lynch and Shanahan are comfortable with whomever they'll get at 3.

Nope

Rather have Darnold and Sewell than Mac Jones.

Actually we swapped firsts this year and traded 2 firsts in the next 2 years. Those are likely to be later round picks if this team plays to it's potential. The 3rd is the compensatory pick at the end of the 2022 draft so it's more like a 4th. Next year is supposed to be a weaker QB class although you never really know. They saw their chance and they grabbed it. I hope they take one of the high risk guys with a big upside. Drafting Jones would just be a cheaper version of Jimmy. If their pick flops then they take the heat but at least they're trying to get someone that can make them more explosive for the next few years. If they were really sold on Jimmy long term they wouldn't have made this move.
