You only give up that much capital for a QB.

Everyone needs to just sit back and enjoy this, SF hasn't been this bold about the QB position in over 20 yrs...it's about damn time

You don't trade to #3 for Mac Jones. The 49ers want an athletic QB.
You trade to whatever spot you can if you don't want to wait for #12. Look at the draft list:
1. Jacksonville Jaguars *
2. New York Jets *
3. Miami Dolphins via Houston Texans
4. Atlanta Falcons *
5. Cincinnati Bengals
6. Philadelphia Eagles *
7. Detroit Lions
8. Carolina Panthers *
9. Denver Broncos *
10. Dallas Cowboys
11. New York Giants
All those 6 * teams will be picking a QB if they think the value is there. Every one of them would jump at the chance to replace their current QB with Mac Jones. With four consensus quality QBs available, you get nothing at #12. So, you look at trading up. Cincy already said "no." Atlanta is going to draft Ryan's replacement. Philly was out of the mix early. Carolina and Denver are going QB if they can. The only option was #3. None of the intermediate choices were available.

2 firsts but whose counting?
No. It is 3 first even if you're swapping firsts it still counts as a first

Now after watching Zach Wilson's pro day, I don't see how the Jets can pass on him. He is a special. Do, now it's on to watch some of Justin Fields.

Not going to lie... if we take Mac Jones at 3 I'm going to be pretty pissed.
He could work out but you don't trade two future 1sts for him. Period. You could get him at 12 potentially.
This is what this FO does...locks in on their guy and overpays on a trade up.

Amen brother. Im thinking they take Lance and sit him a year. Would really love the Jets to pass on Wilson

I really don't want Lance or Jones @3. If we made this trade intending to draft one of those 2 I'm disappointed and think Shanahan has shown yet again an inability to properly grade QB's.
You not wanting someone equates to Shanahan improperly grading QBs. No offense bro, I will take his opinion over yours.

Trading Garoppolo now means no SB this season.
Gotta say it: I think a lot of people are completely misreading the Garoppolo situation. The 49ers think they can win the Super Bowl this season. That isn't likely with a rookie QB starting. Unless they get a tremendous offer, why give up the SB shot by moving Garoppolo?

Right. He's probably here until the end of the year. The rookie takes over in 2022, right when the 49ers need his money to starting looking at extending Bosa.
Everyone who reads this board knows I'm not a Jimmy fan, but the smart move is to keep him on the team through 2021. We don't need the cap room this year and it would give the rook time to learn the system and build confidence. Who knows, if the kid is good enough make he takes over mid/late season. This is best case scenario.

I don't get it..if they tried to trade for picks 3,4 and 5, why did they not try to trade up for 2??
Because NY is locked on Wilson at #2.

WZ gonna implode when we trade a 3rd for Sam Darnold and draft Penei Sewell.
not according to Lynch...this is for a QB, sorry NC there isn't a OT worth 3 1sts
I spoke to @49ers GM John Lynch after the team traded up to No.3. The move was made to select a QB and I caught up with Lynch at BYU QB Zach Wilson's Pro Day. 🤔 From Path to the Draft @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/KTRZbdf1WS
