And like Cossell said, it really just comes down to philosophy between a classic drop back QB in Jones who can do everything within structure but who struggles with off schedule ability or a raw QB in Lance who can do it all with his traits but needs to be refined to learn everything as a raw clay mold.

This is tough. My brain tells my Jones because I think he'd be the easiest to develop for Kyle and if we nearly won a Superbowl with Garoppolo, he should have little issue with Jones given he's on a rookie QB contract and can build a super group roster like Tampa around him. On the other hand, Lance has the ability to transform an offense and has the luxury to sit and learn like Mahomes, Young, Rodgers, Brady, etc. but is going to require Kyle in his ear hole 24-7 for a couple years (1 learning, 1 playing).

Safest vs. Boom or Bust?

My mind tells me Jones but my heart, Lance.

But you don't trade up this high for safe. I think Kyle wants a project and he loves challenges and he's got that ego. It's Trey Lance.

I concur.

I say go for the gusto. Jones may be a safe pick but I don't want to be looking for another QB that can take us to the next level 3 years from now.Lance or Fields have much bigger upsides. I agree that trading away 2 first round picks is a bold move so don't play it safe with the pick. I remember when Walsh moved up and took a relatively unknown receiver named Jerry Rice. Many of the sports writers thought it was a real stretch. He saw the potential for greatness, not the ability to just be another receiver.
The prospect tiers go like this:

Trevor Lawrence

*large gap*

Zach Wilson
Justin Fields

*large gap*

Trey Lance
Mac Jones

Lance and Jones would've been good picks... at 12.

We traded up to get Wilson/Fields. Period. It's whomever the Jets don't pick between those two.

Lawrence is going #1. Wilson-Fields are going #2-#3 and Lance-Jones are going #8-#9 to the Broncos/Panthers.

It's amazing a large chunk of the media can't figure this out... I don't know why people are low on Fields all the sudden. Dude was hyped as QB #2 for awhile in this draft (and as someone who would be QB #1 in most drafts that don't have Lawrence) and now he's suddenly fallen off... maybe Tuesday's Pro Day will wake people up again.

No clue.

I watched his 78-minute 2020 tape yesterday. Dude had one bad game against NW (best defense in the nation) with his best WR missing and half of his OL out. And he sprained his thumb and his coach finally figured out late he just needs to run the ball because NW was selling out completely to stop the pass. RB ended up breaking a record.

I figured his playoff game against Clemson should've more than cancelled that NW game out and put him back up as QB #2 behind Lawrence but I guess not.

Maybe Tuesday's Pro Day will wake people up. Wouldn't be surprised if he runs a 4.4x 40 time and suddenly the media starts saying the Jets should pick him instead of Wilson.

With the inflated times we're seeing this year he might run 4.35

Nice post. I think there's a middle ground between the two. To me that's Fields. He could definitely benefit from a year behind Jimmy and he has all the tools to be elite. I think he's less of a project than Lance and can still make the off schedule plays and pick things up with his legs. He may not be as pro ready as Jones but some may argue he is. Two year starter? I feel like Shanny can get the pocket passer he wants out of Fields as well as the playmaker. Basically Fields gives them almost as much boom as Lance but less bust.

It's like this every year i feel like. The guys who get downplayed at this point make a "Miraculous jump up the boards" a few days before the draft and guys who were going top 10 fall to the 2nd round.

I truly feel the pick will be Fields at #3 and Mac Jones will fall to the 2nd round.

I agree with most of what you're saying. It could be argued that removing the word LARGE between the gaps may be more accurate. I agree with your order on the guys and where you put the gaps though.
