- 49ers will have a better chance to contend for a Super Bowl this year with a veteran QB.
- Rookie QBs seem to have more success in league if they aren't tossed into the fire year one.

The reason to trade JG is more draft capital to improve the team. The reasons to not trade him (other than no offers):

If its Trey Lance, they'll be forced to keep Garoppolo this year. And maybe next year too. Lance is too raw.
If the pick is Fields or Jones, it will either be a draft day trade, or they'll wait until the trade deadline until a desperate team knocks on the door and offers a 2022 first round pick. Maybe the Patriots if they're starting Cam and hes sucking

If it takes a QB 2 years on the bench before they can play the game, then they shouldn't be drafted #3 overall.

If a team offers us a 2nd rounder for him? Yes, absolutely.
If we really feel that our new rookie QB would benefit from a red shirt year, then why would we have our bridge QB be a guy that isn't capable of staying healthy for more than 4 games in a row?

If they trade JG, they need to sign or trade for a vet to start this year

Who isn't going to be versed enough in this offense to lead us anywhere. If we trade Garoppolo we're essentially throwing this season out the window. We have too many veterans ready to win now in 2021 to do that. We will keep Jimmy and see what he can do with one more shot, and have the insurance plan and future waiting in the wings learning the system.

I wonder if the Pats would give up a 2022 1st RD pick for Jimmy thinking it's going to be a low pick. It would give us one of those 1st RD picks back.

Yup I would, but I don't think we will. I guess a lot will depend on who the pick is.

If we're offered a second or better now I'd sure be tempted to take it. And I'd be trying to trade a 4th for someone like Minshew.
But I do wonder.. if Jimmy plays all year and has a pretty good year, could we trade him for a first next offseason? Or two second round picks?

No not in this day and age. The pro environment can't be absorbed in one off-season. Any rookie would benefit from 18 months observation. That's why so many top first rounders fail. They never live down their early mistakes.

Aaron Rogers didn't start till his 4th year and even then the Packers record was 8-8. Joe Montana started in his third year. Steve Young really didn't start till much later-yes he may have started else where-it was not till he sat for several years did he begin to climb the success ladder.
Especially if the offense is complicated. It is one thing to start. Another thing to be successful.
Plus learning and conditioning in the era of COVID. Will only slow the progress.

Doesn't matter what we want. What will the niners do is what matters. Jimmy has a no trade clause and can nix any deal. So unless he gives his okay, it ain't going to happen. Thus the leverage is with the team wanting him and Jimmy.

The niners making all the moves in FA this year to win. It took Matt Ryan a whole year before the offense clicked. You think Fields or Mac are ready-maybe Mac is more ready than Fields, but neither better than Jimmy mentally. Its Jimmy's health that is the main problem.

When Lynch said he wanted to upgrade the backup QB position we didn't realize he was talking about Jimmy.
I would keep him this year and let the rookie learn for one year. And if Jimmy is hurt again, the rook learns on the job.
But keep JG as a backup as long as you can. If the right trade offer comes, then you take it. Not saying Jimmy will accept being a backup either. But if he is, he would be the best in the league. Has never lost as a backup QB.
Edit: never lost as a backup QB who started the game.

Totally agree!!! People are to quick to dismiss that the FO are making moves to win now. A rookie quarterback will not take us to a superbowl this year. If they do draft quarterback, he will sit 2 years. Plus, why hasn't JG asked for a trade or said anything in the media Ala (Deshawn or Russell). I think JG, Kyle, and John have some secret hand shake or something. I wouldn't be surprised if the 9ers draft Sewell to replace Mc glitch to sure up the line.

NFL network's Brian Baldinger doesn't think he is the #1 OL. Reason - is he notices that he is to often on the ground.
