There's been a lot of chatter about the 49ers being open to trading Jimmy before the draft (or during, I suppose). Now, if a team presents a ridiculously generous offer, sure, you have to at least consider it. But ultimately, when you take emotion and being a "prisoner of the moment" out of it, the team will hold onto Jimmy this year because he represents their best chance at the playoffs and a Super Bowl run.
Looking for logical reasons to back this up? Well, I'm glad you asked!
1) Lynch and Shanahan have been touting the need for better QB depth.
How does starting a rookie and trading Jimmy answer this? It doesn't. A rookie/Rosen/Josh Johnson (or another vet) will not cut it, especially since I believe the Niners need to ACCOUNT for injuries moving forward. You could even argue last years QB room had better depth since Mullens and Beathard were in the system for 3 years. Three newbies? No thanks.
2) Look at all the 1 year contracts and veterans they signed.
I won't say this is an "all-in" year for SF, but it's definitely not a year they want to throw away. Unfortunately, starting a rookie would be doing just that. Which leads us to 3...
3) Rookie QBs generally aren't ready.
Wilson, Fields, and Lance all faced inferior competition. The NFL jump is a big one, plus the learning curve for Shanahan's offense...no way. And for those people saying Mac Jones is the most NFL ready; what is that based on? His 15 career college starts? That's always a red flag. Plus, Alabama had a significant talent advantage in all games. Just because Jones is the most NFL ready, doesn't mean he's actually ready day 1.
4) Cap savings don't matter anymore for this year.
The Niners signed everyone they wanted to, plus a few outsiders. They have enough cap room for their draft class, plus another FA or 2 when they shake free later in the year, plus for any in-season signings. An extension for Fred Warner doesn't need to be done until summer, and even that may not touch the 2021 books. Financially, there is no benefit to moving on from Jimmy now, but of course, 2022 is another story.
I didnt think SF would trade up to #3, so of course anything is possible. But I really don't think weakening their chances in 2021 by trading Jimmy for another draft pick or 2 is in the cards. Keeping Jimmy solidifies the short-and long-term futures of the franchise.

The problem will be that JG will know he's a lame duck and we have to hope they brings the best out of him.
If the Pats or another team offer us their 2nd round pick that would be tempting but KS would have to truly believe the rookie can start which he won't be able to do pre draft.
Its not really a lame duck situation unless he's conceded that he's not the best QB on the team. If he gets 2021 to make or break his spot here, he will be happy to show the 49ers that drafting a QB was a mistake. If he steps up big in 2021 and leads us to a SB win, it's highly unlikely that we get rid of him. Maybe we look to trade the rookie instead.
Any QB worth having will rise up to a challenge like this, not get discouraged. Im sure Jimmy would much prefer to get to be the starter this year and prove everyone wrong.

People always forget this part. Jimmy would literally have to agree to being sent back to NE. Maybe he's mad that the 49ers are drafting his replacement, and be cool with it? Or maybe he realizes that SF is easily the best team he would be able to play with, and is going to take that opportunity.

Nope. Without him, this is a 5 win team, thus, miami will get the niners top 10 pick in 2022.

I torally agree and not just drafting at #3...but trading #1 picks to get to #3.

I think they're banking on trading Jimmy to make cap room for the draft class.
Besides Jimmie no wanna stay. No believe coach Kyle no more.

the team has plenty of money to sign the draft class and to sign PS/FAs during the season in the event of injury.

Jimmy probably wants out anyways. I bet he has his agent talking to teams about a trade.
Why would he want to stay somewhere he's going to be replaced?

uhhh maybe because it gives him the best opportunity to win and get a big contract from a team in 2022 if and when the Niners decide to move on. the $25M he'll earn too is another reason. lol

Exactly. Not sure why folks are struggling to see the forest for the trees. Competition or not, this is still the best environment for him to succeed and repair his playing reputation. His value is at an absolute low right now and it will be easier for him to build back up playing on this roster with these players.
An even stupider take I've seen is "what happens if Jimmy plays well, then the Niners are stuck with him and the rookie" as if having two good QBs is a bad problem to have.

If they do draft quarterback, he will sit 2 years. Plus, why hasn't JG asked for a trade or said anything in the media Ala (Deshawn or Russell). I think JG, Kyle, and John have some secret hand shake or something. I wouldn't be surprised if the 9ers draft Sewell to replace Mc glitch to sure up the line.
NFL network's Brian Baldinger doesn't think he is the #1 OL. Reason - is he notices that he is to often on the ground.
Brian Baldinger also believes we should start the QB we draft at 3.
