In hindsight, was Vernon Davis worth the 6th Overall in 2006?

VD was badass, without Vern those 00s niners teams were unwatchable. Gore was stomping people and Vern was the only weapon we had in the air

i think he was. He was the best TE in nfl for a few years and was a complete matchup nightmare
if we had some decent WR he wouldve been unguardable (i still salty we had to start brett swain in the NFCG in 2011

Still was the only TE with 13 or more touchdowns twice in his career with Alex Smith throwing to him? You got to be kidding me. Such a good player And some of his best games were in the playoffs under pressure. He set records Vs the Giants and he kicked ass against the Saints. He even b***hed Luke K in the Panthers game

The decibels was ear piercing he was clutch
It's laughable when people say Vernon Davis didn't have great hands because we all know Jimmy Graham was also the best tight end with Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham dropped the most balls for quite a few years.
These TES had a few drops but the production far outweighed three or four more drops than normal average TE's

Well he was a better pick than Manny Lawson who they passed up on Nick Mangold for. Mangold and Baas on the o-line to protect Alex Smith.
I loved adding Joe Montana on madden 2010 to the 49ers when they had Gore, Davis, and Crabtree. Made the offense elite and the defense had a prime Willis. Instant champs.

He was fine as a #6 pick. Ahead of him there were some decent players (Ferguson especially) and some busts (Young), but this was a draft whose first 4 picks were almost known before the actual day - the only surprise was that Williams (a decent player) went ahead of Bush (underwhelming after his rookie season). Around #6 then there was a bunch of possibilities, some of whom came to be solid players, and some busts. But as a draft it wasn't atrocious. Hawk was mediocre, and Huff bascially a bust; Whitner was excellent, and we got him later anyway; Sims looked promising to begin with but never lived up to it; Leinart was a disaster, and Cutler was I guess OK but no better than that. Ngata was really the one great player who came after Davis, but the consensus that year was that the offense needed to be fixed first. They had Gore, they hoped that Jennings would stop being injured and would cover Smith's blind side, and that Antonio Bryant would prove the dependable outside target. Davis was to be the next piece. Add to that an ageing but still awesome Larry Allen on FA and you can say that it was a conservative but reasonable rebuilding strategy which sort of worked after a terrible couple of seasons. Despite some terrible blowouts (SD, Chicago), the team showed fight and was actually 5-5 before the wheels came off after choking away a winning position away at the Rams. Even then they afterwards won away at Seattle and Denver. I have almost fond memories of the '06 team. They were still working on the talent side, but it felt like a positive year. Gore's career year was the highlight of course, but Davis showed glimpses of what he could do (in the Seattle game especially).
Davis helped in the years after, and was excellent in the 11 and 12 playoff runs. He was a good player. Not a great one, but a solid pro with some very memorable moments. He was a good pick.
