the only positions in the top 10 that are worth it are Quarterback, Tackle, Edge, and CB.

At least he didn't quit in the middle of a game like his brother did. I'm sure he regrets is after seeing how good the bills have become.

I look at Gore, Davis and Willis as the main core guys of that "new era" of 49ers football following the dismantling of the Garcia/Owens teams.
I know this old but we can't bring up those names without bringing up Joe Staley and Navarro Bowman. TBH u could also include Ahmad Brooks and Justin Smith. Come to think of it damn that defense was ripe for becoming a dominant unit with the right coaching. 🔥🔥🔥

Wut? They had Fangio and Harbawz and unfortunately they didn't show up to the SB until the 2nd half.

Yes because we've had so many first rounders not contribute a dang thing and Vernon became quite formidable.
I've changed my perception on first rounders. Do I want them all to be elite contributors for 10+ years? Of course I do. But the reality is that rarely happens. If a first rounder turns into a "good" player that is worth the pick to me.
That's the difference between someone like Solomon Thomas and big Vern. We were all just hoping and praying Solomon would just become good. He never really did. Vernon eventually did and was a bit elite at one point.

In hindsight, was Vernon Davis worth the 6th Overall in 2006?
Now let's do one on Trey Lance.

VD's combine numbers were one of a kind for a TE!
Yes he was worth it, and he had a great career with us.

You probably should make that pick in hindsight.......
The only thing I could recall that was a major flaw of his was the body catching....he did not have great hand/eye coordination. Out side of that...come on the dude tested off the charts.
Some times a pick is not just about the player, the pick is how the player affects other players. We had a super young QB, and you have to put talent around young QBs....even if you have to reach for it a bit.
VD did not live up to his testing, ok...that is probably true....but you have to make that pick....they had to give Smith weapons if they wanted a shot at having young QBs work back then.
People forget what the NFL was like back then. When you drafted a young QB early in the draft....that was normally one of the most expensive players in the NFL. Rookie QB's taken top 5 use to flat get paid. So if you had that much salary cap going to a QB....dude....you had to put talent around them...you absolutely had get weapons....because you had to start those dudes early....you could not have that large of a percentage sitting on the bench waiting.
I could be wrong on this, but I think Alex Smith was something like 9 million against a 70/80 million salary cap. That would be like paying a rookie QB 33 million dollars in today's salary cap.
