He was a good blocker and an adequate receiver but with his size and speed it seems like he could have been dominant. Kittle isn't nearly as fast but he's a far better receiver and blocker.
That was my thing when he was coming out. For as big and fast as he was he was always tightly covered by his defenders.
Most of his big plays with us was off of design. Wasn't really beating anyone per se.
How did Michael Huff turn out? 😄
I go wayyy back with you on this krizay. Some good times back then.

They both had 1 all pro season. Plus my want of Huff was based on his ability to also play corner. Not sure we ever got to see him try that.
Plus te Raiders started him off as a SS. His tackling was always the biggest knock on him. With his range being his best asset. OAK set him up to fail from the beginning. They eventually corrected their error. He led the league in PBUs his 2nd season as a FS and was named all pro his 3rd year as a FS
Would have been nice to see him at his natural position from the beginning

IMO Vernon Davis is the most underappreciated 49ers player of my lifetime.
With a very limited, risk adverse Alex Smith throwing him the football, he still was the top of the league in TDs over his career.
I feel like if Vernon played with Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, or Tom Brady he would easily be a HOFer.
Miss me with the alligator arms and can't beat anybody crap. He wasn't the most natural catcher or route runner we've had but he wasn't the worst... and that's how some people act. He may not have played at his 4.35 speed but he was still faster than any LB he faced.

You look back at that draft and it's a lot of pretty good players. Not elite, not busts just a fine pick and that's where Vernon would fall.
If you pass on an elite player that hurts, if you draft a bust that hurts. Passing on Mahomes for Soloman Thomas is regretful the Vernon pick may not have of been the best choice Ngata probably would of been a better call but it was a solid choice. Not a pick to regret.

Yeah he was. He was so fast and an amazing blocker. The only downside is that his hands are meh, always has to jump to catch lol and inconsistent qb play early in his career. Also, Singletarys only cling to fame as a coach is him shutting down vernons diva tendencies. But I think in a modern nfl offense he's still taken top 15.
The more I think about it, DK Metcalf could be considered the modern day version of him. He's an athletic freak, I think his hands are better but he feels just as stiff and Vernon was. He still plays very emotional and he's getting the rep as a cry baby, but if their new hc can reel him in that would be unfortunate for us. DKs athletic traits alone are worth a 1st round pick. I'm still shocked he wasn't a 1st rounder.

He was a beast blocker in his prime. CRAZY powerful and fast..could NOT catch until after Singletary humbled his ass .

I like the Vernon Davis pick. I predicted it too that year. He really played well with Alex. And showed his speed a lot. My fav years of Vernon was 2009-2013 and well his rookie year I was excited to see what he could do.

I remember thinking that, but since they kept catch percentage stats he isn't that far behind current and some soon to be HOF tight ends. A good group of HOF guys caught 65% of targets, Vernon 62%. Travis Kelce is off the charts at 71%, but I think he is by far the highest of the ones with a lot of career yards, and look who he has throwing him the ball.

Yeah, those were tough years. Davis was solid, but maybe not quite the superstar we hoped for. Ngata might've been a better pick in hindsight, but who knows?

Worth it for his playoff performances alone. Dont forget the giants saying hes the only guy they had to worry about. And he still scored 2 tds
Of course. Adonis physique. Fast. Strong. Productive for several years.

Loved the pick, I was hoping for Gates like stats(
) but...
Still he brought excitement, grit and comedic relief (the jumps). A lot of big chunk seam route catches. Lack of offensive identity hurt his stat lines during his prime.
I think the combine was first televised right around that time (2006). I recall quite a few "workout warriors" shooting up the draft board with insane combine showings. Vernon was one, I remember Matt Jones who Jacksonville took lmao.

He played nearly 10 years here. Good pick during years we had a horrible front office. Likely the 3rd best TE we have ever had

Davis was an athletic freak. He was fast and strong. (33 reps on thr bench press). His downside was hs hands. At 8.75 inches they were kind of small. He also only had a 32 inch arm length which is a little short. It made it hard for him to go up and contend for the high throws. He ran that 4.39 but he didn't play that fast. I'm not saying he was slow but at 4.39 you would think he would be outrunning more guys than he did.
All and all he was still a very good player and probably the right choice at that time.
