In hindsight, was Vernon Davis worth the 6th Overall in 2006?

Look everybody gets a case of V.D. now and then, we got our case in 2006; dude did his job to the best of his ability and that's that.

Davis was still an all time great 49er, whether he lived up to his draft position or not.

I'll take a player drafted high like Davis over Solomon Thomas, the LB we drafted from Bama, the WR from Illinois etc. those were horrible picks

We should have a thread on here asking this same question about Alex Smith going #1 overall.

No. No we shouldn't. We've had hundreds over the years. The only correct answer is NO. And I'm a fan of Smith.
Vernon Davis has become one of the most underrated players in NFL history imo. Even 49ers fans think he's maybe 2nd or 3rd best TE we've had.

Kittle and Jones were probably better. Kittle might end up setting all time records at the position and Jones was a borderline HOFer on the last of the Dynasty teams. 3x Superbowl winner, 2x All-pro and 4x Probowler over his career.

...and Jones was TOUGH! It is amazing he still has hits wits about him after all the hits he took going over the middle. Davis only took one hit as hard as the ones Jones took about every fourth game.
Ted Kwalick doesn't get recognized enough. He was better than Davis IMO.

Having said that, Davis was worthy of the pick.

He could have been the only person to declare that year and still No.
What do people expect with the 6th overall pick? He had a great career, and for a few years, he was a top 3 TE in the league.

You guys expect way too much.

Jones was apparently smart enough to invest in tech early in the game....wouldn't be surprised to hear his net worth is $$$.
A guy with his athletic ability should have been a much better player. His route running was brutal. Ran a wheel route...thats it. Not a good blocker.

If you looked at all the #6 picks over the last 20 years, my guess is Vernon Davis is at least 80th percentile in terms of talent/production.

Looking over that 2006 draft, only Tamba Hali stands out as maybe someone better/preferable. A few other choices would have been worthy, but this is far and away different than other first round busts we've had.

2009-2013 was a great run, worth every penny.

That pick coulda been made maybe if they kept him on the bench at least a season or two.

But that required stability in coaching staff, and OC, which for some reason we didn't have back then.

If we drafted Rodgers, could we have redshirted him a year or two? Very hard to say.

Rodgers likely ends up being the better pick, but Smith in a Rodgerless draft, I could see at #1 under the right circumstances.

2005 Smith makes 2021 Lance seem pro ready by comparison.

Also didn't help the HC and OC are clueless about the pass game
