In hindsight, was Vernon Davis worth the 6th Overall in 2006?

Not a good blocker? Okay....

He was one of the best blocking TEs in the league. I dont think he watched 49ers football during that time.
Yes. Amazing athlete. Waisted on Nolan though. Too bad Chancellor rearranged his DNA.

He was a completely different player on the field after getting smoked

There have only been a few times in sports history where I can point to a particular moment or play and say, "yeah, that changed his life"... that hit truly did.
From the standpoint of being a pillar of a new chapter in franchise history? Yeah, he was worth it.

I look at Gore, Davis and Willis as the main core guys of that "new era" of 49ers football following the dismantling of the Garcia/Owens teams.
He's the greatest Tight End in 49ers history. He is the career leader in Receptions, Yards, and TDs at the position. He was without a doubt worth the #6 pick.

Vernon Davis was one of the leagues elite TEs in his prime that any team would've loved to have, he may have turned soft after the Kam Chancellor hit in 2012. But this a horrible thread topic. He would've put up better numbers if he did have such worthless QBs like Alex Smith or Krap. If only Harbaugh and Baalke were good enough to close the deal on signing Peyton Manning in 2012

Davis was good but not great. He was an excellent blocker but he didn't play like a 4.38 TE. He's another in a long line of workout warriors that don't play as fast as their workouts. Lance said we isn't going to run a 40 because he thinks they're worthless. He prefers they look at the laser timing of him actually running in a football uni. That makes more sense. I never understood timing guys on a track, wearing shorts and starting out of a sprinters stance. It has no real bearing on how fast they play on the field.

He did play like a 4.38 TE... with suspect hands, poor route running, and no elusiveness after the catch.

Lol the most memorable yac moments was when he does this weird goal line jump against that single ny giants db defending the end zone. Then he had that one long td called baxk for a penalty against the ravens i think where he had the weirdest stop and go jukes that somehow worked

6th overall pick? Probably not but for sure worth a mid to late first round pick. I remember when we drafted him I expected him to be one to break a ton of tackles in addition to his crazy speed. He seemed to always want to hurdle defenders, which sometimes worked and other times looked awkward. Great blocker and caught the biggest TD in recent playoff history.
Yes.. hell he would have had the record of TDs in a season for a TE, if Singletary wasn't a stubborn idiot....fake wanna be tough guy. (As a coach).

Although Vernon wasn't the same since the Kam Chancellor hit.

Gotta look at that draft. There were NOT 15-20 guys better than Vernon Davis in 2006. He may not have changed the TE position forever but he had a really good career and if every first round pick performed like Vernon Davis, you'd never have a bad team.

Alright....i will take back the blocking comment. Just wanted to see who bit on it!
Still not worth it though.

Ya, he's only the all time leader for 49er TEs in yards, receptions, TDs. what a bust

I never said bust. The question was whether he was worth a 6th overall pick.

Oh ya .......and you dont draft a TE that high unless he is elite. Davis did not have that kind of career. His route running was sloppy and had hands of stone. He had a physical prescence that should have allow him to physically dominate with the ball in his hands but he did not use it.

Did he have a good career yes. Did he meet or exceed the draft position and his potential....Nope.

In regards to Singletary, the berating on the sidelines may have saved his career because before that he was garbage.
