This. Even the Willis pick was considered questionable at the time. Remember the big Adam Carriker debate.

Dude, I am so glad I was wrong! I wanted Carriker at the time! After we drafted Willis, I started looking at his highlights and saw his number was 49 before and thought, "maybe this might be cool." And boy was it ever the best pick!
Looking at the list you posted, Crabtree and Vernon Davis really got me excited.

I think Willis was very exciting and then Bosa after that. I would put VD up there also from the last 15 years.

My Carriker moment was Alex Smith.... ya, I thought Arron Rogers was going to be a scrub and was so happy the 49ers drafted Smith... I'm not GM material.

Tend to agree here. If you allow us "Old Timers" to go way back, I would say Ronnie Lott ('81) and then Jerry Rice ('85). I also thought Wilbur Jackson ('74) was going to be really good, so what do I know? I think I saw half of Lott's games/highlights @ USC. Bill Walsh' drafts in the '80s were something to behold.

I too wanted Carriker lmao 😂 Glad the 49ers didn't listen to me.
I vividly remember the 2001 draft as being the one that hooked me in terms of draft fanaticism. We had a glaring need at pass rushing DE...and the fact that arguably the best one in the draft played in the Bay Area was just the cherry on top. We were sitting there at #9 and when we traded up to 7 to grab Andre Carter, I was absolutely elated...so incredibly pumped. If I remember right that might have been Bill Walsh's last involvement w the Niners drafts. Andre never turned out to be that perennial double digit sack guy but he carved out a solid career
This is a great post, I started following the draft hardcore in 2006 (damn it's been 15 years already) and if I had to make a list of my top 5 who I was looking forward to drafting (or potentially drafting) would be:

1) Patrick Willis at #11 in 2007
2) Vernon Davis at #6 in 2006
3) Nick Bosa at #2 in 2019
4) Michael Crabtree at #10 in 2009
5) DeForest Buckner at #7 in 2016

Man, I'll never forget how badly I wanted Willis in the 2007 draft. I was literally watching NFLN every night trying to get as much info as I could about it, I was so worried we were going to take Carriker.

Davis/Bosa were super close for me at #2 but I went with VD. Damn thinking back to my thoughts back then is bringing back the nostalgia.
Been following the Draft since 1983 and honestly, the most exciting 49er draft for me was the Harris Barton year!

I was super thrilled about Bosa being available, but I think Vernon Davis takes the cake. Davis was more of a "sexy" pick because there was the combine build-up with all of his insane measurables. A tight end with a 4.38 40 time with the most chiseled physique imaginable.

Bosa was obviously a better prospect, but he wasn't quite as flashy, in that he was more of a "clinical technician of his occupation" as opposed to Davis who was like, "wow, this guy could break the game of football, his combine numbers were unprecedented". As an analogy, it's kind of like saying, Peyton Manning was a better prospect than Michael Vick, but Vick was in my opinion more alluring, novel, and exciting.

Also, extending beyond the first round, I absolutely loved the 2013 draft. Especially Marcus Lattimore and Tank Carradine. Those were two pre-draft internet darlings. So many of the prospect sites hyped them up on sleeper lists. I lost count of the number of times I read, "if it weren't for the injury, Lattirmore/Carridine would've been a lock in the first round". (Which, I'll add, is an incredibly tired cliche that is thrown around like candy.)

Tank and Lattimore were such let downs

Moon be 93 years old
Just got back from the future...Wilson.
I'd have to say Patrick Willis, Nick Bosa, and Vernon Davis, those were the 3 guys I wanted each year , so 2007 for Willis, 2006 for Vernon, and 2019 for Bosa.
I was most excited in 2005 with the #1 pick. Then we made the pick. That excitement faded quickly.
