Even the people who still go by the classic Jimmy Johnson trade value chart disagree on the value of a pick in a future draft, but pretty much everyone agrees that they have less value than that team's pick in this year's draft. The most common belief I've heard is that a first round pick in next year's draft has about the value of a second-round pick at the same position the team is picking in this year's draft. Thus a first-rounder next year from a team that finished with the twelfth worst record this year would be about the value of the 44th pick. A pick two years out would have less value still. Think about it, if someone wanted you to loan them money for a year, you would want them to pay interest. If they won't pay you back for two years, you'd want even more interest.
When you look at the chart with that in mind, it was a reasonable trade. There are other standards on this...the most generous I've heard was that next year's first rounder is worth the last pick in the first round this year. But again, a pick in two years would have less value still.
