What is the NFL's new Injured Reserve rule?
The NFL's old Injured Reserve rule stated that in order for a player to return from IR, he had to have been on the 53-man roster for at least one day. If they went on IR before the season started, they would be considered out for the entire season. That is no longer the case, as the league enacted a significant amendment to the rule earlier this offseason.
"By Competition Committee; amends Article XVII, Section 17.16(C), to permit each club to place a maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return. Such players will immediately count as two of the club's total designations."
Now, NFL teams can place up to two players designated to return on IR on cutdown day. This means that the Cowboys could place Edoga on IR during cutdown day, but not at any point before that day. If they were to put him on the IR before that point, he would be out for the entirety of the regular season.
Teams are allowed to bring back up to eight players from IR during the season.Using the new rule for Edoga will use up at least one of those players now.
Putting Edoga on the IR on cutdown day will mean he will miss at least four games of the regular season, but at least he'd be eligible to return after that point, allowing him to remain a part of the depth chart which now includes only Asim Richards, Earl Bostick Jr., and Matt Waletzko behind the starters.

I think they are trying to hold onto him. I get it. Really good RB that just can't stay healthy. I'd keep him around for the year if I could. Props to Jordan Mason because he really took that number 2 role.

Great news, and thank you for the information. Social media is so unreliable nowadays. I like Mitchell and while I hope he stays on the team, I can see the 49ers trading him at some point in the season if Gurendo proves durable enough.

except Mitchell is specifically listed with the "season ending" designation while DL Kalia Davis is listed with a "designation to return".

why not take a look at Zach Evans
I think the one benefit of season-ending IR is that they keep control over him for 2025 instead of him becoming a free agent. So he gets a no-contact season to get healthy and 2025 becomes his contract year.
So talented but always hurt man.

Reminds me of Jimmie Ward and Jason Verrette. Both talented and always injured. At least Ward eventually got healthy enough to give the team a couple good seasons.

Mitchell doing what he does best keeping that spot on the Injured Team.
What's injured about this guy now? He's always injured. What's the problem? Why do we carry him on the roster?

whats crazy about him is that almost every injury he gets, they make it sound like its minor, and then he misses half or all of the season. they never really seem to say what the actual problem is - just "he has a knee injury. will miss the year" or "he has an ankle issue, he's going to miss the next decade".

it's wild. lol
Seems like he randomly became injury prone as soon as we got CMC. Would have thought he tore his acl/mcl with how long he's been hurt
