It's hilarious how over the years 49er fans always want to go with the RB backup. In Mostert's case, that is ridiculous. He has only played RB for less than 3 years and has already established all-time 49er records. His performance in the NFC Championship game two years ago was legendary with 220 yards on 29 carries with 4 TDs. No runner in Niner history has ever equalled that performance, not McEhenny, Perry, Craig, etc. Thankfully, Shanahan saw the greatness and will rely heavily upon his running this season with Sermon the perfect addition to keep Mostert from having to run up the middle too often. Last season he established himself with the fastest MPH in the league on 2 separate occasions, faster than all of them. If he can remain injury free, he'll have a helluva season. The suggestion to trade such a great back is asinine. He's the best RB on the team as well as the best special teams player. Furthermore, he's a team leader and highly respected by the others. He's not going anywhere but to the end zone.
This, all day.

If he's dominating like that, they'll pay him and keep him. The new guys will get their reps too in this thunder and lightening scheme.

we have had horrible luck with RB health over the past few years and these picks were about depth imo I think Sermon will have 30-40% of touches by mid season though. He will be our short yardage and goalline guy too compared to mostert as our homerun guy

Also to get this back on track, what do people think we will see from Elijah Mitchell? Respond in the name of a backup running back.

Example- Kendall Hunter, Kevan Barlow, Duncan Harris, Derrick Loville..

Because of the talent in front of him, I expect Elijah Mitchell to be a Raheem Mostert from 2018. Not a lot of carries but will flash with opportunity.

Tough one!

Kind of cheating but how about a part-time Reggie Bush when he was with the Saints?

I'd agree with that, especially with Wils on ice. Mitchell should get his licks too (5-10%, depending on whose active him or McHasty) even if Mostert is fine health-wise.

But he's not really dominating like that. Most of it is Kyle's scheme and playcalling. That's why the team basically ignored his demand for a pay raise.

He's at FA after this season and likely won't be on the team next year.

I actually liked the Mitchell pick but hated taking Sermon in the 3rd round. Outside if a 3 or 4 game stretch he was very pedestrian. Then he gets one carry vs Bama and bows out.
I tho k Mitchell gets some nice run come mid season.

I couldn't disagree.. I like Sermon but I was hoping to land a DB.. them Mitch was really a surprise considering we're loaded on that position..

My eyes tell me something else.

Scheme helps, but scheme doesn't make fastest in the league. Home run threat every play.

I've heard very good things from this rookie. Maybe our next late round gem!

All teams have health issues with RBs. Look at the guys that have been hurt over the last few years. Nearly every top RB has missed significant time. It shouldn't be surprising since it's about the only position that defenders can tee off on anymore with all the new rules. Can't touch the QB and receivers are protected almost as much. The poor RBs get all the anger and frustration that's built up in the defenders.

He's been lining up in the slot as well. He's gonna be a weapon on offense for sure.
I like hearing that he runs like he's being shot out of a cannon.

Breida did the same thing for a while here.

The fact that they didn't extend him or respect his salary demands then drafted an RB in the second, another in the 6th, and picked up one in FA... should tell you that John & Kyle think he's not THAT special.

They paid what mostert wanted last year, unless there were more demands this year that I'm not aware of

our depth took a hit with the Wilson jr injury, mchasty Mia, breida, Coleman gone. Needed some bodies as injuries screwed us at RB also last year.

Radio Raheem is still a weapon for us

He wanted to make more than Coleman's 4.5M and he got 2.6M. Considering how many backs John and Kyle have overpaid (Jet, Coleman, and Juice 2X) that's a pretty strong statement.
