No one's gonna trade a pick for him, but I think he surprises people, he could take over for Moore as a Gunner.

I am more confident everyday that Jimmy is not on the roster for week 1. I don't think they can keep him. If he gets hurt after week one, he not only is guaranteed his contract for 2021, but should he be injured enough to not pass his physical for the start of the following season in 2022, his salary for that season is guaranteed and would count against the cap. 49ers cannot afford to take a 50M hit for this and next season. Let's use the money to pick up another ER like Justin Houston and maybe another CB and this team will be stuffed to the gills with talent! I am on the record, Jimmy is gone before week one.😓

We're not cutting Jimmy with a SB caliber roster. Stop this nonsense.

If Trey out performs Jimmy in training camp and wins the #1 which I think he will, Jimmy will not be on opening game roster. Even if they just cut him. It would affect the locker room. So we'll see. I'll get back to you later.
This team is loaded. Even the most negative, glass half empty posters here have to admit that.

No way they cut Jimmy, i don't care what anyone says, if they did that, it would effect the locker room, it would make Kyle look like a liar, he said Jimmy is here for 2021.

Agreed, very loaded, we're gonna cut or trade some good players that we may not want too, like Hasty, I hope, if cut, he clears waivers, onto the PS, I like Sermon, Mitchell & Hasty at RB in 2022. I also like Mayden & Darrion Daniels, I hope they clear waivers.

Curious. If Trey beats out Jimmy, you think Kyle keep him as a back up?

He's not going to. Takes time to learn the playbook and command the offense enough to make sense bench Jimmy absent bad play from Jimmy.

First, I doubt that Lance beats out Jimmy. He doesn't have enough experience. Second your whole reasoning flies in the face of what Shanahan himself has said. The goal this year was to improve the QB room. They like Jimmy because he wins when he plays, the problem is that he hasn't been able to play as much as they would like and the back-ups they had couldn't get it done when he was out. Now you're suggesting that they go back to the same situation that prompted them to trade for Lance in the first place. Except instead of having an experienced starter with two subpar back-ups you have a rookie starter who lacks experience and two journeymen back-ups. Genius.

Lance is only 21 years old, he has time to sit and learn how the NFL game is played. There is absolutely no reason to rush him onto the field unless Jimmy can't get it done for some reason other than the usual biases of the people who come in here to talk s**t about him all the time, I imagine he will be the starter throughout the season with Lance coming in under certain conditions like late game blowouts, or with specific play designs. Lynch and Kyle went to York before they made the deal for Lance to see if he was okay with paying Jimmy for the year, to which he said yes, so the money invested in the QB position this year is going to be the same regardless of who is starting and who is sitting. I think the only thing that would change that is if Jimmy decided he didn't like being benched for a rookie if he believes he has been playing well enough to keep the job. He is very popular in the locker room and Shanahan would be playing with fire if he benched Jimmy for any other reason then consistently terrible play, a lesson that Jim Harbaugh had to learn the hard way. So far consistently bad play hasn't been Jimmy's MO . He'll throw the occasional head scratcher but he has also shown he can really ball out and I suspect when all is said and done that, for the moment at least, he is the guy who will give them the best chance to win. If things go south and the team falls out of contention then I suspect Lance might see more opportunities. Time will tell I guess. Go Niners!

Yeah Trey's not going to beat him out, especially when he hasn't even signed his rookie deal. Remember Lance hasn't really played since 2019, sure he had 1 game in 2020 but then the season was canceled till 2021 Spring, had he played for NDSU in the spring, of course we don't have him, but NDSU probably wins the FCS National Championship. And yeah Lance needs to learn the playbook first, and with the season a little over a month away, I just don't see how he learns it that fast to where Kyle is 100% confident he can run it, if in season he's ready then he'll start, but Jimmy isn't getting cut, makes no sense IMO, I have no faith in Rosen or Sudfeld as QB2, plus you can deal JG in te offseason, even if it's a 3rd it's better than outright release, also we won't be on the hook for $25M, if anything, they'd work something out, hell Dee did it this offseason, he could have said no, they would had to guarantee him the $11.6M. Also if you cut JG after everything Kyle has said, how does that look to the locker room, the vets, Trent, Juice, who committed long term, they don't want to waste a season hoping Lance becomes Mahomes, when he may crash and burn by being put in to early.

That's a key thing, Jed said he has no issue paying both JG and Trey, the 49ers(Lynch) said they budgeted for Jimmy's cap number, they'll be around $4.5M to $5.5M under by my projections, it's not like they need that $25M, no one who needs a new deal is even eligible(Bosa, Deebo, Dre, etc...), they're not extending McGlinchey since they picked his 5th yr option up, they likely want to see him rebound before committing the kind of money for a RT. No reason to overpay for any FA out there right now, they've been unsigned since March for a reason, Ingram wanted more than anyone would offer, KC wanted him, but couldn't afford $4M but PIT could.

Also I know the whole, well TB and KC brought everyone back and added(KC), yeah well, look at structure, TB used 4 void years on almost everyone of their signings to get them under the cap, KC redid every deal they could to get Thuney, and others signed, if we go out and do that, it's just the dumbest thing to do, I always hated redoing deals, or the void years, it just pushed issues down the line, look at GB, they redid Rodgers to add more cap room this yr to get Randall Cobb, who Aaron wanted, and probably to extend Adams, but in 2022, they're $35M(pre Rodgers redo) OVER the $208.2M ceiling.

The harsh reality is that Jimmy is the starter unless he gets injured or plays like crap.
[ Edited by mayo49 on Jul 27, 2021 at 11:17 PM ]
An FYI, Tartt wasn't put on PUP, same as Dee, so they won't be eligible to begin the year on reserve/PUP, meaning they will be on the 53 man at cut downs. Just something for people to know, the only 2 players who can begin on PUP are Moore & Wilson.

That has been the plan since before the draft. What is the big surprise?

I thought drafting Trey would hasten Jimmy's departure.
