49ers 2021 Roster:

QB(3): Jimmy Garoppolo(2022)/ Trey Lance(2024)/ Nate Sudfeld(2021)

As much as I would like to only keep 2 QBs, I'm afraid you might well be right with this call. At some point we need to groom a backup QB for next year. I hope they brought in Sudfeld thinking that between him and Rosen at least one, but likely both, will make it to the practice squad, and we can just carry two on the active roster.

I would really like to keep Gallman if he looks as good with us as he did last year at the Giants. What do you think his chances are of making it through to the practice squad? It seems that some team will have an early injury at RB and he will be high on the list of pickups based on his performance last year.

Gallman isn't subjected to waivers, so he can just be released, and then sign with us the next day, also if Dee isn't ready, they may decide to do short term IR, so cut Sudfeld, next day place Dee on IR(short term), re-sign Sudfeld because he wouldn't have to go through waivers either. Guys like Givens, Key, Hurst, and anyone with less than 4 accrued years have to go through waivers up until the trade deadline, then everyone has to go through waivers, including vested veterans(4+ yrs accrued like Gallman, Sudfeld).

Ah yes. Thanks for the reminder!

In that case, keep him on the PS until we trade the ingrate Mostert part way through the year.
If we keep Jimmy we´ll lose all the advantage of having a QB on his rookie deal.

Why are you even worried about that right now!! The 49ers have cap space and they're not even doing nothing with it. Don't worry Jimmy will be gone soon.

No problem bud, any time, I know some of this can be confusing, with who has to go through waivers, and not, some people will overreact is someone is cut that's a vested veteran, only to be signed the next day like if Dee makes the 53, only to go on short term IR.

Yeah, keeping Jimmy this year gives them the best chance at a super bowl, plus try to repair his value, and end up with a 1st or 2 day 2 pick in a trade next March. He won't be here in 2022, not at a $27M cap number.
I don't see Sanu making the team. The Niners didn't want him last year when we we're In desperate need of a receiver.

I think Hasty goes to the PS (obviously) but I think Mostert+Wilson+Sermon+Mitchell are locks, and in our roster crunch, Gallman is either traded, or tried to be snuck onto the PS but he probably gets claimed. Mitchell can be a PR/KR for us, so having him be the 4th RB is fine, and we can keep roster flexibility else where.

I think the drafting of Mitchell in the 6th locked him in, and obviously Sermon is a no brainer, only way I see Gallman making it, is if we have an injury to the other 4, or if we for some reason trade Mostert or Wilson (unlikely). It's not like we have anything invested in Gallman, we gave him NO signing bonus, and he was brought in pre draft, in case we didn't get any RB's we like.

I'm leaning towards 9 OL now, and 4 RBs with Gallman on PS.

I think Kyle is waiting for the inevitable injuries and regressions to make the decisions for him.

If everyone is healthy, the team's 5th RB is better than their 6th WR (IMO), so if everyone is healthy, I could see Kyle going with 5 of each and then grabbing two young WRs off the waiver wire and stashing them on the PS.

Elijah Mitchell could be the 5th RB AND the 6th WR.

This is what I thought when we drafted Mitchell, was maybe they'd try him as a slot WR, maybe a RB/WR like Curtis Samuel was for the Panthers. That would allow Gallman to stick. But I do like Austin Watkins Jr., and am really rooting for him to make the 53, I have to think Deebo, Aiyuk, James, Sherfield, & Hurd are locked in right now at spots on the 53. The thing Mitchell also has is the ability to be a returner, same as Ambry Thomas, would allow James to be the slot WR, we could finally see if he has it in him to be apart of this WR core.

Too soon to say.

If it's too soon to say why is everyone writing him off? That's my question.

Something to monitor for sure. I really like Givens game. Hopefully the allegations aren't true.

I think he ends up being suspended the first 4 games of the season, even if he's acquitted, the NFL & Goodell does their own thing.
