Are we going to:
  • Keep 4 TE's (and why?)
  • 4 RB's?
  • Is there enough talent to even keep 9 OL?
  • Is Kinlaw even worth wasting a roster spot on?
  • Keep 6 LB's?
  • 7 CB's?
  • 5 S's?

No reason to keep 4 tight ends.
I can see 4 rb's
No we are overrating the d line depth just like we did last year. There is virtually no depth behind any starter. Ty Mcgill might be the only real depth guy with potential
Kinlaw should be cut
6 linebackers seems like a stretch. guess if a guy is a special teams stand out
Maybe on 7 CB's
$ safeties

TE is the one position teams did take our guys we tried to sneak on the PS. So while we might like the potential upside of Latu and Willis, the staff seem safe with Woerner and Dwelley and their experience too. I'm not sure what to do about this group.

Could we sneak a Mason and Laborn onto the PS and save 1 spot for another group.

Yeah. Even Givens was getting blown out last night.

It's certainly looking like they need to upgrade Kinlaw quickly.

Yeah, that 5th or 6th would be Oren Burks, a ST ace but also played well last year in fill in. But they seem to like Ball, Winters and Graham too. Even DFF and Robinson aren't horrible.

You'd think the staff like Luter, Thomas, Jamison and Womack as depth. That's 7.

Will Wilks keep his boy, Miles Hartsfield as that 5th S?

I know, I like him a ton too. He did not have a good game last night though.

Close to mine OTC, we're thinking a like, my differences are a 4th TE(Dwelley), a 6th WR(Conley), no Ambry, need to see more from him, but stock up for him. Also no Taco Charlton. and McGill.

Here's mine from my site, https://49erscap.com/index.php/2023/08/13/updated-49ers-2023-53-man-roster-projection-with-practice-squad-injured-lists-plus-2023-2024-salary-cap-implications-post-preseason-week-1/

I could see Conley making it, but if he's gonna be inactive most days, I lean towards PS for him.

As for CB, I really want to see Womack and Jamison get longer looks in the slot. If Oliver lays another egg, I think he needs to be 3rd string slot or even cut if he's not among the top 6.

I am wondering when Luter gets activated (odd that we had no update from Shanahan on him today), he might be the 6th guy who can backup both outside spots. This is a long time to be out with a bone bruise. Those typically heal within 2 months and it's been well over that time since his injury during OTAs.

Yeah thinking about Conley, he would be inactive, unless Bell isn't the KR/PR like I think he would be. PS seems like a sure thing as he doesn't go thru waivers.

I really hope Oliver plays well, he was hyped by Wilks, he got a decent deal, fully GTD for 2023, doubt he gets cut, but we'll see, I need to see Womack & Jamison more on defense.

Same here, idk what's up with Luter, maybe they PUP him for 4 weeks see how he is after those 4 weeks, and maybe it's worse than they thought, the injury.

Oops, was missing Dwelley.

I think he makes it over Charlie for now. Kittle gets banged up a lot and I think we need a fourth TE more than a sixth receiver.

Feel like we might be able to stash Charlie on the PS.

Tons of guys who could be pulled off the PS at WR to fill out the bottom IMO and a sixth receiver would prob be inactive most of the time.

Only other thing I'd consider instead would be picking up an extra offensive lineman.

They are going to have to keep some injured players on the initial 53 to keep them available for the season.

QB (3)
Brock Purdy
Sam Darnold
Brandon Allen (Got a gut feeling, Trey is traded for whatever they can get for him so they can unload his salary which is significant)

RB (4)
Christian McCaffrey
Elijah Mitchell
Jordan Mason
TDP

FB (1)
Kyle Juszczyk

WR (6)
Deebo Samuel
Brandon Aiyuk
Jauan Jennings
Ray Ray McCloud (injured)
Danny Gray
Ronnie Bell

TE (4)
George Kittle
Charlie Woerner
Cameron Latu (they will not cut Latu)
Brayden Willis

OL (8)
Trent Williams
Aaron Banks
Jake Brendel
Spencer Burford
Colton McKivitz
Matt Pryor
Jon Feliciano
Jaylon Moore

DL (9)
Nick Bosa
Arik Armstead
Javon Hargrave
Drake Jackson
Javon Kinlaw
Clelin Ferrell
Kevin Givens
Austin Bryant
T.Y. McGill (they keep T.Y. over Hyder because he is more stout on the inside. I think Kyle is counting on Taco, Barrett & Beal making the PS for Edge Support.
Don't be surprised if someone is added after cutdowns)

LB (5)
Fred Warner
Dre Greenlaw
Dee Winters
Marcelino McCrary-Ball
Owen Burks (injured. I think they take the chance with Graham to get through waivers)

CB (6)
Charvarius Ward
Deommodore Lenoir
Samuel Womack
D'Shawn Jamison
Ambry Thomas
Isaiah Oliver (feeling funny about Oliver after seeing him play against Raiders. Wasn't considered a starter by Kyle. Could he be a surprise cut in order to keep Qwuantrezz Knight or Luter?)

Safety (4)
Talanoa Hufanga
Tashaun Gipson
Ji'Ayir Brown
George Odum (injured. Another reason they may want to keep Qwuantrezz Knight)

Specialists (3)
Jake Moody
Mitch Wishnowsky

Technically they only save $940K by trading Trey for 2023, 2024 about $6.5M, which would be useful for 2024, but I'm not convinced Allen is anything good, nothing more than a PS QB IMO.

AB, how do we square this with Dieter, he just wrote we save roughly $9m? I'm not sure the answer, but I figured Dieter would have the info, it's in his Mercury News piece.

That number is wrong, he was paid a roster bonus for showing up for camp, idk what the article states, but they only save $940K.

At this point, I'm thinking (and hoping) it'll be Ilm Manning over Matt Pryor.
