It's telling that they always make sure to qualify these statements with caveats that give them an easy out in the future.

"There's no open competition (right now)"
"There's no rookie that is going to come in and take your job (if you're at the top of your game)"
"Jimmy is the #1, Lance is the #2 (until he shows he's ready to compete.)"

Neither side can read much into these statements, because they're not definitive or really telling us anything that wasn't already assumed or stated a long time ago.
