I am afraid you might be right.

I see Trey Lance as a 3 year project before we know whether he is boom, serviceable or bust.

So, the quickest wait will be 3 years and by then many of our current star players will already be towards the end of their big contracts, meaning we probably wouldn't have been able to take advantage of Lance's cheap contract, that is if he works out of course.

But, if Lance doesn't pan out? Then, I am afraid I can't look that far ahead to even have a rough guess how long it will take before we can get back to the big dance.

Sure hope he works out because if he doesn't this regime will be fired and we looking at another complete turn over, man the future not looking good, Kyle needs to right this ship ASAP while we have the prime years of these star players like bosa and kittle

That was what I meant, if we ever were to get to the point of firing Shanahan and therefore creeping into the next regime, first of all you wouldn't even know whether the organization would still go with Lance as the new HC would most likely want to sign or draft his own QB.

Let's be honest, Lance is not ready, so there really isn't all that much Shanahan can do at this point to fix him apart from keep getting him to play scouts team QB. I don't think you can just throw him in there now, he will look completely lost like yesterday. But, if they do, they may have to write off the entire season. Just to put things into context, when we started Kap, he had already been sitting behind Alex Smith for a year and a half. There is a reason why some teams/HCs believe in sitting rookies, same thing with Mahomes. To add, did you know Lance had only played 18 games in college? And do you know how many games did Kap play? 51!! This was why Kap was totally ready when his number was called.

Would it be better to waste this season and let Lance develop and grow or let him make these mistakes next year and waste that season also?

That is the executive decision the organization has to make. If they throw in the towel now after 4 games, they need to manage the fans' expectations.

You have to remember the idea from day one was to play Jimmy until Lance is ready which was why Jed said he is prepared to keep Jimmy all the way until the end of his contract if needed.

Kap didn't need to waste a season to get ready. He got himself ready behind the scene. You know something? When the back-up QB is ready and playing lights out as the scouts team QB, people (as in the players) talk which was exactly what happened with Kap. For Lance, may be he needs to ball out as the scouts team QB first.

I as a fan have don't have expectations of a superbowl. I would rather see this guy get the rookie mistakes out this year so next year is growth.

But, there is a basic level of proficiency he needs before you can just throw him out there, if he keeps making mistakes you could potentially destroy his confidence. May be we should have considered Lances' extreme lack of experience before we drafted him. For example, Justin Fields had played almost double the amount of games Lance did in college.

Besides, there are a ton of 9ers fans out there who would think you are nuts to write off the entire season just 4 games in at 2-2. May be if we lose a few more perhaps.

Next, in a showdown of 1st round QB's, Trey shows the world why we chose him over Fields for a win at Chicago. After that we only lose 2 more games, both to the Rams. Finish the season at 12-5 and secure a wild card. We lose in the 2nd round of the playoffs and look to next year, when we will have extra money from Jimmy's contract.

I was thinking the same thing but I have I have us losing to the Cards twice plus an extra loss , for a 10-7 season.

I certainly never advocated for drafting Lance. That was Shana/Lynch. Agreed and Fields has almost as many college incompletions as Trey has passes. Ok Sarcasm but still. Not much to evaluate.

Kyle got scared, knew.Jim.y wasn't gonna get them to the end game so he panicked and was looking for Mahomes 2.0. I think he missed on the pick.

I understand fans not wanting to throw away a season but a season with no hope of a Superbowl is already lost. Realistically, they can't win the NFC West, let alone the entire NFC. Fans gotta see that.

It was a bad pick IMO but let's see how it plays out.

Realistically I think we will struggle to make the playoffs in this division. I just hope Lance is going to improve massively. I'm just not seeing anything from me to think he'll be here in 4/5 years time.
so this season for me, is all about what we have there. If we have something, great, if not, it's curtains. Not just for the season, but inevitably lynch and Shany too. If the kid busts, they won't recover from that.
Still standing at 11-6. Both our losses were from the 49ers not being consistent. Team has looked good at times in all the games, just need to be more consistent.

If we're starting a rookie the rest of the season the last thing we'll be is consistent. Not a nock on Lance but it's the reality of playing a rookie qb.

This is the exact scenario I believe that's going to happen but we may lose six or seven games and make the playoffs and advance to the second round because of injuries.

i was thinking 11-6. The last half of the season is very favorable. Esp if the Rams have a playoff spot locked up in week 18

I stand by my original statement.

There are at least 5 more guaranteed losses on the schedule.

8-9 or 9-8. At best.
Kyle special with 1 more game played 7-10
i really wish we knew what this team needed to adjust to get things right.

Is Jimmy the better option at this point or is it Trey?

Is Shanahan part of the problem or no?

Why do we continue to be the most injured team?

Why are we the most jinxed team in the league?

Why did we move to Santa Clara?

Is Demeco Ryans the wrong fit for our defense already?

Will we ever win another SB in this life time?

Is a divorce of Shanahan and Lynch on the horizon?
At this point.. I think the season is lost. Rather we won't to admit it or not, we need to be in rebuild mode. The secondary needs an overhaul, along with the o-line. We need a big bodied Wr and another durable rb.. I think it's fire sale time. Let's get some draft capital back

This ship is sinking fast. We have too much talent to not make the playoffs but that talent is underperforming.
