He's a trusted vet. Sure he's older and not great, but he's not Brian Allen bad either. He's reliable and he probably likes staying in the area and the 49ers know they can count on him in a bind.
but overall I agree Josh Norman > Dontae. If our pass rush stays healthy, I'm sure we'll all be happy by how well out secondary plays.

I'd say cheap vet more than trusted vet. You can pretty much take any vet off the street and stash him on the practice squad. Norman is coming in one week before the season and he'll be active on game day. There's so much veterans out there I'd trust over Dontae Johnson, I wish they would play a new song already and move on from him.

Haha yeah he is basically the bottom of the barrel and barely good enough to keep himself on rosters as a reserve and practice squads. Im cool with keeping him on the PS incase our depth takes a hit with injuries but yeah, hes pretty terrible haha

wish we didn't resign dontae johnson to PS, he's one the main reasons we lost against eagles last year as he had no idea where ball was on a td pass by wentz. if d. johnson has to start, we need bosa and company to get at least 6+ sacks otherwise any average QB is going to exploit him all day.
Norman is decent depth piece but may take a week or two to get up to speed. Rather Demo start if there are injuries over D. Johnson.

Johnson is below average to mediocre at best on the outside, but not too bad in the slot. He is what he is, a versatile backup who can play STs and is a far better option than an inexperience PS player such as Brian Allen who got destroyed last year -- that game probably ended his career it was so bad. Is he even on a PS now? I know it's not saying much that Johnson is 1000x better than one of the worst players I've ever seen, but in all seriousness, he is basically a poor man's Witherspoon that is more versatile. He can cover decently, but will never find the ball.

For. Real.
I think we've forgotten a little bit how badly we were hit by the injury bug. By that game Sherman and Moseley were out and Witherspoon was nursing a hammy. I remember thinking, "who the heck is Brian Allen? Well, surely he can't be as bad as Dontae Johnson.......MotherF......."

I have a prediction!!! This dude balls out with Bosa, Ford, Ebukam, DJ Jones and Kinlaw in front of him. Then gripes about being under paid, the 9ers lose him in free agency in 2022. Then flops for the team that overpaid for him because they have no pass rush!!!
J/k I do see that happen in the league though!!!
I hope he balls out and shows he's an upgrade over Richard Sherman!!!

The bar is low, just needs to be better than Johnson.

He's a big upgrade over Dontae Johnson just with his presence. I think he's an upgrade over Sherm as well. When he started in Buffalo last season, he was pretty good and played in all there playoff games. He looks like he's in much better shape this season to.
I like the move. Good, veteran depth signing. I think it will payoff for us when we need him to start a game or two at some point in the season. That being said, I hope he's not having to start more than a handful of games. We need to get at least 13-14 games out of Mosley and especially Verrett!

He's a good practice/scout team guy. Can play a few different positions and is smart. Perfect scout/practice body

He played well for the Bills. Much rather him on the field than Dontae Johnson. We've had a lot of luck with over the hill corners. I think he'll be great depth this year and veteran leadership.

Since almost every post has Dontae Johnson's name in it, my question is this. Is he really that bad anymore? I would like to think he's improved a lot over the years and would definitely be a solid vet at this point. I'd much rather have him fill in if they were in a pinch over some rookie or FA off the street. People hate this guy but I feel like he's a better player now. I also can't remember the last time I really saw him play for an extended period of time. I'm thinking I'd remember that if he was still horrible… idk maybe I'm just too stoned.

He's still atrocious on the outside. He did better in the slot than on the outside so there's that. However, him being on the field is never a good thing. I'd much rather have a rookie like Demo or Norman on the field than this ass clown
