I watched the first 3Qs of the 49ers defense and here's a quick summary of what I saw on DET's passing plays:
- lots of zone. I could count on one hand how many times they played man across the board.
- lots of Cover3. It looked like the 2018 49ers defense with the amount of Cover3 dialed up. They pattern matched, not spot drop. Having Verrett allowed them to man up on the weakside WR while zoning to the other side. Let's see if there are any adjustments after losing Verrett.
- only a few snaps where they disguised presnap
- not a lot of blitzing, even on 3rd downs.

It was a rather vanilla gameplan and it seemed like Ryans just wanted to play it safe and out-talent the DET offense that has underwhelming WRs. Sound strategy, force the talent deprived DET offense to overachieve in order to score points. Take out the explosive running plays that DET had, and it would have looked even worse for the DET offense. Goff was not showing enough to lead a long, grinding scoring drive.

So, I fixed the issue and we're ready to rock and roll. Thanks for the patience.

Thanks as always for these JD. What was your take on how we played Hockinson? Seems to me we should of used the best coverage LB in the nfl (Warner) to man up on him, but looked like he was open quite a bit. Was he just finding soft spots in the zone? Did we try to man up on him and he beat us?

Well, as Thl noted on the next page - same thing I saw. LOTS of zone. We wanted the Lions to have to execute long-grinding and patient drives and they weren't.
just and FYI as well, I'm editing the video now to cover our run defense mishaps. Should be done with it in maybe 2-3 hours.

Good job JD!

I like that nugget you gave about Alex Gibbs and his view on centers and RBs in zone scheme. I didn't know that.

Seconded

LOL
Jonny,
Did you see if there a strategic, execution, or play call reason why the offense scored 18 fewer points in the 2nd half?

Well, one they didn't get a pick 6 . Our offense scored 24 points in the first half, 10 in the 2nd. DET got a little more aggressive in the 2nd half. We scored on 4/5 drives in the first half with the only one we didn't was the botched snap. 2nd half we had the grounding penalty that killed a drive and we missed a FG, we had another play where DET was able to bring a guy free off the edge on a play action pass off 2nd down and we ended up 3rd and forever - killed that drive, had the Deebo fumble and then another drive we ran 3 straight times near the end to kill the clock. I think Wishnowski only had 2 punts in the game.
THIS is why I visit the Webzone. Your skills are much appreciated, jonnydel!

It helps reinforce that the NFL is basically 'Chess', but with grown men tackling each other.

It really is, like, really really is. It's why you see the quarterbacks who are best at playing this chess game tend to win all or almost all, the Lombardi's.
Good stuff

You say Kinlaw doesn't play 1tech but I'm pretty sure he can and has played there with us.

Nice breakdown of the Sanu 3rd down conversion. Having a TE that demands double coverage creates problems when they go 3x1 with Kittle on the weakside and trips WRs to the strong side, when the defense is in man coverage. The Patriots last season combatted the 49ers 3x1 by putting their best CB (Gilmore) on Kittle and Kittle beat him. He's too big for a CB and too quick for a S/LB. So DET doubles Kittle which gives the trips side a matchup to exploit.

Did you notice any differences in Ryans' defense compared to Saleh's? It takes more than one game to build a tendency but just wondering if anything jumped out.

Crazy how DET doubled Kittle, but he still had 4 catches for over 70 yards, including the 35 yard gain, which I thought he was gonna break it for a TD, but got caught. Kyle is seriously a genius on offense, he knows how to attack a defense.
