Beef it up: 5 man d-line

I'm not trying to be over reactionary based on last nights game, but since the d-line is the strength of the defense, why not employ a 5 man line at times?

Ryans seems to like to play man at time, so go man across the board with 5 d-linemen. Or you could play zone behind it with 3 CBS, 2 S and 1 LB.

Either way, the rush wasn't getting there with 4, sometimes because the throws were quick. But teams have been running on the wide 9 pretty well, so maybe 1 more body up front can slow that down.

Not as the base defense, but mix it in a bit.

Speaking of which, is cover 3 still the base defense?

This is an old post, but defenses went away from 5-man D-lines in the 1950s I believe because of favorable passing rules (compared to previous areas) and you needed an extra man out there to cover pass catchers. Any OC would have a field day, throwing to backs and TEs.

It can work if you play man and get enough pressure that the QB is forced to throw it quick. If he has time, then your secondary is burnt toast…

Surr. I think in part its also about finding ways to get ypur best players on the field.
No we don't need that. We are not the Eagles. We have more talent than them in the front 7. We would beat them with a healthy Purdy. They don't scare me against a healthy 49ers team.

Man, imagine running the hurry up against it lol! Playing against a blitz that you always knew where it came from? Yes please!

Id run a 5 man D line with a healthy Dee Ford or prime Von Miller, Nick Bosa, Aaron Donald, DJ Jones, and AA. Back 6 could be our week 1 linebackers and secondary on selected plays :).

I thought Lenoir played pretty well in the playoffs.

I thought he was steadily improving.

Facts. 5 man fronts in the NFL will never be more than a situational front, not a base front. That went out of favor decades ago. The only level that runs 5 man fronts is at the elementary age level. High schools don't even run those fronts as a base front. Running backs and tight ends would be nearly ungradable in the passing game. Levels concept would destroy a 5 man front defense, over and over again. You'd have to go 5-2-4 or a 5-1 nickel to play Zone, which would completely expose your LB's. Had Purdy not gotten hurt I think Shanny would have put on a coaching clinic against that defense.
