I mean, it's well known that he uses certain plays just to set up others, so is there an issue scouting the other teams' defense? Or is it that players simply aren't executing?
You have to execute play A well to get the defense to bite and open play B. When play A is stuffed by a 7 man-box, play B won't work.
Example. We hit a bubble screen to Deebo in the 2md half getting numbers with an inside zone fake and we gained 12 yards
The next play we ran the same plays but handed it off. The backside LB flew out on the bubble screen and it opened a huge lane for Sermon to cut back and he had his biggest run of the day, going for over 10 yards.
But, if a WR blows his block on play A and we get 2 yards you never get the LB to overreact for play B.
Execution will always be paramount. No degree of play-calling ability will ever overcome execution. It's why BW's book, "the winning edge" spends a huge amount of time on how to prepare and train players to execute.
