I said this end of spring/beginning of summer:
Jimmy, Mullens, Beathard > Jimmy, Lance, Sudfeld... FOR 2021!
Experience matters, especially in Shannahan's offense. And as for experience/attempts:
Mullens: 600 (all with SF)
Beathard: 497 (all with SF)
Lance: 318 (all in college)
Sudfeld: 37 (all with Philly)
Mullens and Beathard were DECENT backups. And that's all that NFL teams really have, a decent backup. Sudfeld SUCKS and Lance isn't close to ready...because he's a ROOKIE who played VERY LITTLE football in college.
NOTE: I am NOT disputing that Lance is the future. But he is a downgrade, IN 2021 as a backup QB for SF.
When Mullens was released by Philly, he should've been signed to the practice squad. I mean, he'd be a DECENT backup option with 16 STARTS in this offense.
I would actually feel better with Mullens (or Beathard) starting next week and sprinkling Lance in, if Jimmy is still hurt.
Because, again, Sudfeld SUCKS and Lance isn't close to ready. Because he's a ROOKIE.

This is a great point. i was just thinking this. We were supposed to be super bowl ready because we had the best qb depth in the league. But it turned out that our premier draft pick cant throw a 10 yard pass without breaking fingers. Or read a pro set. SO what do we do? We DONT go get a 2nd string in FA or bring up sudfeld to the 53. Come on.

This thread is laughable. Lance literally has never played in the NFL and came off the bench. Beathard got the benefit of a week of practice before his first game, and he got an "amazing" 72.1 passer rating his first start.
Lance's first NFL action came after being the scout QB all week, coming in after Jimmy got injured. 7 runs for 41 yards (including clutch conversions), and a passer rating of 117.13.

What's laughable? That Im suggesting 2 QBs with YEARS OF EXPERIENCE in this offense are better options than a ROOKIE with MINIMAL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE?
It's actually laughable that too many "Veteran" members here with THOUSANDS of posts have MINIMAL football knowledge.
Sorry my well-reasoned, LOGICAL POV disrupts your IRRATIONAL "Go Lance, go!" narrative.
And calling for a ban? That's WEAK.
"Wah, wah...he disagrees with me so make him go away! Waaaaahhhhhhhh!"

You can't use three first round picks on a QB and then not even have them be the backup, tthat's nuts. Garoppolo is hurt, the team has to ride with Lance and hope he can settle in and perform well for them.

Your statement was that Beathard as a backup is better than Lance. That's patently laughable, no matter how much you are convinced of my "minimal" football knowledge. Experience matters. And so does talent. As pointed out, Beathard's first extended action in the NFL was quite a bit worse than Trey's. When the evidence doesn't support your argument, you'll lean on something that has questionable quantifiability. There was never a time that Beathard was better than what Lance is right now.

Also, you said "for 2021," not for week 4 2021. So even if you are comparing Beathard and Mullens' very best, by the end of 2021 I don't think there will be any question at all about it.

I don't care about what's "nuts".
I care about what gives the team the best chance to win.
And right now, even though I hope Im wrong, that's not Lance.

You realize Beathard won at Arizona last year, right? One of the few highlights in a lost season. AND CJ rand the read option a few times.
I stand by Mullens or Beathard being a better QB in this offense in 2021. WITH Lance sprinkled in.
I really hope Lance lights it up the next few weeks. It's going to be a mix of backyard football and broken plays. And if it works, great.
The Niners will lose all the games Jimmy is out.

"Well reasoned," but you're judging a rookie as worse than C.J. Beathard based on a game in which he came off the bench after getting zero first team reps and playing as the scout team QB all week. Give it two or three games first and then we can see if you're right (neglecting his inevitable improvement as the season progresses).
Here's one thing we KNOW for a fact: Lance isn't going to take nearly as many hits as CJ, and he's not going to throw nearly as many picks as Mullens.

Teams win games. Beathard did not play particularly well that game. Lance is not why we lost this game. Cannon is why we lost this game.
EDIT -- wait you're not talking about Beathard's first game.
That said, that's WEEK 17 Beathard. Let's look at Lance in week 17.

Now this is pure comedy here. Mullens and Bethard were decent back ups my ass.
