SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS at ARIZONA CARDINALS - 2021 Game 5

I think we all know this in the back of our mind that they will bring Lance up to speed in a deliberate pace. Unless Lance is a quick learner and can show it on the field. Rapoport giving us his captain obvious.

If Lance balls out today he will be the starter moving forward. Anything less, average to below average and we will see Jimmy again

Figured that was obvious.
I'm in the "depends on he 9ers run game" gang. If the 9ers run game is poppin' then I think the 9ers have a chance or at least keep it a close game. Keep the Cards offense off the field and take pressure off Lance in the pass game. If the 9ers run offense stalls it's going to be ugly.

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious - Jimmy gets the job back once healthy.

I've probably been in the minority with this take as well. I never bought into the narrative that if he balls out today, he'll keep the job. Eric Davis talked about this as well saying that once they go to Trey, it signals the season is over to all veteran players, many on one year contracts. What you're saying is you are now preparing for a future, using the present to prepare for that, and many of the players won't be here for that future. They are here today and they want to win now. They don't have 6 year contracts. It also signals you're giving up on the season way early when there's still a full season to go.

I don't think it matters how he plays today. It's just film for Kyle and Trey to build on as Kyle gets him more ready for the future and learns himself, what Trey-specific plays were effective, which weren't, what he was comfortable with not, etc.

Again, once Kyle feels he can run the 85% more and be effectively consistent on 3rd downs, he'll be ready. That's unlikely at this early stage.

Today is going to be very telling with Shannahan. Entire week to set a game plan for Trey so no excuses. Need to let him improvise and it's not the time to try to mold the kid.

Jimmy hasnt done anything to lose the starting position except get hurt.

Just lead 3 straight games of 7 pts 1st half…sounds like a $100M QB to me

No. New starting QB's or dudes off the bench can have big games right out of the gate because defenses don't know how to defend them. Kyle's more concerned getting him fully ready for the future to be the weekly bonafide starter.
LOL.

Huh? Eric Davis' takes are dumb half the time.

if he balls out and they win….the vets will think the season is over lol? Wtf is that? What vets are gonna be upset if they play the better player? Not one single vet signed a massive contract because Jimmy was gonna be the QB for one more yr. all these 1yr vet min deals? Who cares they would have signed elsewhere if they got offered more end of the day.

OMG stop with the 85% theory stuff. If they win games that's all that should matter. Every vet should want that…if kyle can't use Trey and his skill set to win games because he's not running this dink and dunk offense, that's on kyle.

Yeah and playing football games gets him better. Let's stop acting like this team has Brett Favre as the vet QB.

He's simply giving you a veteran player take at this stage of the season. Veterans aren't stupid. Trey could pull this off but they still will know it might not be because he's ready to carry the game plan every week going forward. They also know things will be limited and learning = mistakes. Mistakes cost you games.

If you disagree with that, cool.

It's still a win-win for me because he's getting real game experience here and tape and an opportunity to grow.
Final prediction for the game:

Cards win 38-17

Lance goes 12-25 for 180 yds, 1 TD and 2 INTs. He rushes for 65 yards on 10 attempts. All things considered, not a terrible first start for a rookie going up against the NFL's last undefeated team without his best offensive weapon.
