I've probably been in the minority with this take as well. I never bought into the narrative that if he balls out today, he'll keep the job. Eric Davis talked about this as well saying that once they go to Trey, it signals the season is over to all veteran players, many on one year contracts. What you're saying is you are now preparing for a future, using the present to prepare for that, and many of the players won't be here for that future. They are here today and they want to win now. They don't have 6 year contracts. It also signals you're giving up on the season way early when there's still a full season to go.
I don't think it matters how he plays today. It's just film for Kyle and Trey to build on as Kyle gets him more ready for the future and learns himself, what Trey-specific plays were effective, which weren't, what he was comfortable with not, etc.
Again, once Kyle feels he can run the 85% more and be effectively consistent on 3rd downs, he'll be ready. That's unlikely at this early stage.
