Nice job covering the "team offensive" mindset. You highlighted some great examples of that. And I liked you covered the change in defense to keep everything in front of them to avoid P.I.'s, albeit to a fault at times. And edge setting.

I just don't like that strategy when you are blitzing. Can't blitz and play 10 yards off. that when you suppose to be sitting on routes and jumping them b/c the ball has to come out fast. One reason our db's never ever make plays on the ball.

Yeah, it's simple pitch-catch there so it defeats the purpose of the blitz. So there has to be a balance playing tight man too because veteran QB's just look for their beat man option at WR and just throw it up for the catch or P.I.

After the ridiculous amount of yards that they handed IND on defensive PI calls, I am okay with giving these CHI WRs a cushion and forcing their rookie QB to dink his way down the field. What was most upsetting was not rushing Fields with discipline rush lanes and allowing him to escape the pocket numerous times for big scrambles.

the strategy worked well against Chicago and the no name wr corp but we got some heavy hitters coming up next. Can't afford to let Stafford just throw 10 yard passes down the field. but i see your point

i swear we teach these never have outside contain. To make it worse we in the wide 9 which should put them in a better position to see what's going on. But AA and Bosa just kept crashing inside for the most part. And they play Kyler and the Midget in Seattle twice a year. You would think they would be well trained on rushing these type of qb's.

There didn't seem to be any emphasis going into the game about restricting Fields' ability to escape the pocket. He's extremely fast and I thought after two big scrambles there would be a concerted effort to clamp down on that. But he did it again and again. Maybe they did adjust, but Fields is so damn fast? They got the W but if they didn't then the story would be about how Fields got 100+ yards scrambling.

Losing the edge was surprising given how well they played against Kyler Murray.

But yes, I had little issue with this esp. because Fields is a mobile QB and they usually throw deep so it's better to have the action in front of you.

Seems like you called out Woerner a bunch of times (I kept thinking Warner is on defense!!!) and looks to me like he really had a solid game blocking. TE2?
Great job as always. Just curious if you have video of the huge Fields flop that got the personal foul on Samson. I would so love to get a better look at that.

Looks like Samson put a shoulder into Fields.
Don't make any sudden moves in proximity of the qb. You'll get a roughing the passer penalty these days.

That was a dumb play by Samson. Doesn't matter if it wasn't a hard hit, he can't try to be slick and sneak in a shoulder like that. The rules are soft, but that's the rules.
I loved seeing those two rushing TDs by Jimmy, and the rugby style TD was awesome too.

Nice video jd. On that Deebo 80 yard screen, Alex Mack was hauling ass, getting 20 yards downfield to block the safety. The new rule about not allowing player to block below the waist when outside the tackle box works both ways. While it forces CBs to stay on their feet instead of chopping an OLman in the open field, an OLman also can't take out a defensive back, which makes it harder to block in the open field. Props to Sanu on the play too.

Good to see a complete game from Aiyuk. When a WR is pumped up run blocking, you know his head is in the game. There was a play where Aiyuk was weakside running a stop9 route, Jimmy looked his way and threw a pass a bit too far outside, incomplete. The point is Jimmy looked towards Aiyuk when Aiyuk was not on the concept side. I think that goes a long way in getting a young WR to run his routes hard on every single snap - have him know that the ball can be coming his way.

I've been b***hing about throws outside the numbers and how lacking them will cause defenses to cheat. Looking at the Next Gen passing distribution chart, this 2021 passing offense heavily favors the middle of the field.
Plays where the WR lines up outside the numbers, and runs a route that gets him open outside the numbers will help relieve traffic in the middle of the field. Aiyuk got enough separation, but the throw is a bit too far outside. Still, I like the attempt and the trust in Aiyuk to win this route.

Below is a 3rd down in the 1Q. This is not normal and I am positive this is gameplan specific - a defense having both safeties inside the hashmarks needs to be punished. Jimmy looked at Deebo's Dig route and saw this. He then targets Hasty in the flat. Completed but not enough to get a first down.

On the near INT that Jimmy threw. It looked like Juan Jennings had a real hard time getting off the line. He was supposed to run a clearing route for Juice's crosser. Jennings did not get far enough upfield to occupy the safety and that allowed the safety to get his hands on the ball. I don't think Jennings should be running any sort of clearing route since vertical speed is not a strength of his. I looked back one play and saw Deebo take himself off the field. I have to think that if Kyle knew this beforehand, he never would have called a play that asks Jennings to run a vertical clearout. Jennings (bottom of screen) should be far enough upfield that Juice (#3 to the left) doesn't run into him. Also, a FB running an intermediate crosser from the slot? That's not something every offense asks their FB to do.

Yeah I saw that play and thought, "Ok......Jennings never got off the jam...." then, "Wait...how is this not illegal contact?" He's getting held and driven 15 yards down field. The throw looked awful from the broadcast but you can see Juice couldn't get to the ball because Jennings and his guy were in the way.

Also, should be noted on that 3rd down, McG got beat badly on the play and Jimmy barely got the ball off to Hasty.

It was actually a good pass to Hasty too. Hit him in stride and if it wasn't for Roquan Smith (fast guy) Hasty might have RAC'ed for the first down. My point though is that safeties be cheating.

Oh for sure. I guess where I'm looking at it, yes, you have to make them pay for that - and we did on the MILLS, but your OL has to hold up long enough for those stop9 routes to work. The one we threw, you see Jimmy had to slide to his left and it was an incomplete pass. You'd like for the OL to be able to hold up just half a second longer pretty much accross the board to allow these plays to develop. But, like I said on the Deebo screen, we value mobility over pass blocking - a la Trent Brown. It means you'll have more explosives running the ball but makes it harder to get explosives from dropback passing, IMO.

Yes indeed. Once Kittle comes back and wants to work the middle, the 49ers need to continue attacking outside the numbers here and there. No need to overhaul the passing game, the middle of the field is still the strength for Jimmy/Kittle/Deebo, and it doesn't have to be intermediate/deep, just spread the target location out horizontally to make defenses honor the width of the field in the passing game.

I'd love MeSean Jackson to join to club for this very reason...bring those Goodwin routes back.
