Big game. Very physical on both sides of the ball. They played sharp, tough and was some fun film to watch. That and it was one of the shorter games to watch on the year.

Thank you so much. I have missed your videos lately. I was hoping you would come back this week with one. I know this is going to be a great watch.

I was at the game so it was hard to notice
Did our rookie CB get a lot of playing time?

Not really. We were in Nickel most of the game with JNo, Hufunga, Ward, K'Waun and EMann.

One thing that Grant Cohn/Jack Hammer noticed in the first half was that the 49ers were facing a nickel defense when they were in 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WR), and they ran effectively in that line up, often having Deebo play a 2nd RB. When they were in the standard 2 RB, 1 TE line up, the defense played much better against the run. 2nd half the Rams played the base defense against 11 personnel.

Thanks JD! I always look forward to your breakdowns of the games. It helps me to see things that I would miss otherwise.

Good vid, jd. On the 1st Ward INT, very heady play by Samson to peel off and cover the RB swinging out to the flat. That was Stafford's checkdown.
Deebo being used as a WR/RB really gives defenses issues. When the 49ers put out JWilson, Deebo, Aiyuk, JJennings, Kittle (11 personnel), the Rams played their nickel defense, which make sense. Suddenly, Deebo is a RB and Wilson plays as a fullback, lead blocking for Deebo (21 personnel). And now there's a run game advantage. I think this is how Hurd was supposed to be used. I can see Kyle doing this more often in future games, and if opponents keep their base defense out there, then Deebo plays as a WR and either a safety or LB is covering a WR.
I thought the 49ers were pretty sloppy when it came to presnap penalties. I think I remember four false starts, unacceptable considering it's a home game. Glad they were able to overcome that since penalties can get an offense away from the run game. Jimmy's passing on 3rd downs was on point.

I think using players interchangeably like this has been Kyle's plan for a while now. This was how he wanted to use McKinnon and Hurd and you can see why.

Talking about the first Ward INT? It was a flood concept so it's high to low. Norman/Ward took away Beckham's vertical route. KWaun took away the intermediate, Samson took away the short.
